NITED STATES ATENT Prion.
wA'sHl'NG- MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,609, dated December 30, 1890. Application filed October ll, 1889. Serial No. 326,749. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL BARCKDALL, of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVashi 11g-Machines and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters and .figures refer to like parts.
My invention relates to the construction of machines for washing clothes, and will be understood from the following description.
In the drawings, Figure l is a central longitudinal section of the tub and rubber, the dotted lines indicatin the position of the lever and rubber when the latter is raised out of the tub. Fig. 2 is a central cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view.
In detail the machine comprises a tub mounted upon legs l and provided at one end with a projection w, upon which the wrin ger may be mounted. Below is a plugp for drawing off the water.
h is a head, its front composed of rubbingbars r, fastened to the sides. This head is pivoted at 5 to the arm a., whose upper end is pivot-ed to an upright u, connected to the tub.
Z is a lever, pivoted at 4. to the front end of the tub and ati. to a link Z2, which is in turn connected by a link or staple 3 to the back ot' the rubber head 7L. The lever Z is provided with a hook 71.. which engages with an eye e on the link Z2, so that when the parts are raised the two will be supported in the position shown bythe dotted lines in Fig. l.
.s are straps which are fastened at the bottom of the front end of the tub and are passed back beneath the rubbing-bars of the head and brought around the back and detachably fastened upon pins, as shown in Figs. 1 and After the clothes have been put in the tub these straps are passed over the upper bar r of the head, and thence back behind and clothes the straps may be passed between any two lower bars of the series, being adjustable, so as to hold the clothes in position in the tub and prevent them from being thrown out. At the front end of the tub are vertical rubbingbars o", as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, between which and the horizontal rubbing-bars of the head the clothes are compressed, being held down bythe straps. The clothes being placed in the tub with the suds, lthe straps are passed between the proper bars and secu red over the pins at the back of the tub. The operator then takes hold of the lever l', drops the head into the tub behind the clothes, and by Working the lever up and down the head is carried forward and brought backward, the clothes being compressed between the rubbing-bars of the head and the vertical rubber 0" in the front of the machine, and, held down by the straps, will be turned over and over in the tub. By repeating the operation a few times the suds are forced through and the dirt carried out, and the clothes will be thoroughly washed and cleaned.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
A washing-machine comprising a rectangular tub having vertical rubbing-bars at its front end, an inclined bottom, a head having horizontal bars pivoted at one end to a projection from the frame-work of the tub, an operating-lever, also pivoted to such tub and connected to such head, and holding-straps, one en'd connected to the tub and theother to the rubber head, for holding the clothes in place while being washed, all combined substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of September, 1889.
DANIEL B'ARGKDALL.
