A. GUMME-R.
VEHIOLE SPRING. No. 443,573. Patented Dec. 30, 18,90.
I I jwezfigr v UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT GUMMER, OF OMRO, XVISOONSIN.
VEHICLE-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,573, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed September 9,1886. Renewed June 9, 1890. Serial No. 354,694. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT GUMMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omro, in the county of Winnebago and State of lVisconsiu, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vehicle -Springs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the pivoting of springs at the forward end of the vehicle; and it consists, primarily, in a fixed pivot, and in locating the same on one or both sides of the spring between the top and bottom edges of the shoe within which the upper half of an elliptic spring is secured, the same being a method distinguished from that wherein the pivoting of springs is done by a movable bolt running under the upper half of said spring or across the top of the same. Theinvention further consists in the extension of the rear pivot to a length that when desired the front pivot may be dispensed with and the pivoting wholly accomplished on one side only of the spring, and behind and back of the same, instead of on each side of said spring, as hereinafter more fully described.
Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the forward end of a vehiclebody, and Fig. 3 an end elevation of the rear end of the same.
A is the central sill of a vehicle-body. D is the upper half of an elliptical spring the center of which fits within the shoe F and is held therein by the threaded bolt L, passing through the several leaves of the spring D and the bottom of the shoe F, and coupling the specified parts together by the corresponding nut J on the bolt L, and, whenever desired, by the usual clips. (Not herewith shown.) The fixed pivots P and E are located at a point in the sides of the shoe F anywhere between the upper and lower edges of the same, and the spring D is connected to the vehiclebody by the pivots P and E entering corresponding holes in the pendants O and V, which, as connections of the plate Q, are secured to the vehicle-body by bolts H and M. The rear pivot E is of a length extending through and beyond a hole in the pendant N, and having a threaded end and nut T, any slack between the shoe F and the pendantV is taken up by the adj usting-n ut T. The pendants V and N may or may not be permanent parts of the plate Q; but if fixed the pendant 0 must be separable from the plate Q, that the pivot E may enter corresponding holes in the pendants V and N, after which the pendant C is secured to the cross-sill B by the bolt H. The plate Q is shown as forming a seat to the pendant C; but it is not essential, since the plate Qneed not extend beyond the rear side of the spring D, and the plate Q is not necessary at any time except in connection with the pendant N, for though the invention embraces three bearings,it nevertheless contemplates being used with two bearin gs only, and these may be behind and back of the spring D, or the spring may be situated between said bearin gs, as shown, and when more than two bearings are used the supplement,- besides lending variety to the invention, contributes also additional strength and security to the connection between the spring and vehicle-body.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination, with a vehicle-body and spring, of the shoe F, having fixed pivots workingin the corresponding pendants O and V, as shown and described.
2. The pivoted shoe F, in combination with the pendants V and N, as shown and described.
3. The pivoted shoe F,in combination with the pendants V and N and threaded nut T, substantially as shown and described,for the purpose specified;
ALBERT GUMMER;
Witnesses:
LYNN PERoEY, BURTON V. GUMMER.
