PUNCHING AND EYELETING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,570, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed September 13, 1890. Serial No. 364,869. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. CORMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at C- chituate, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Punching and Eyeleting Machines, of which the following, together with the accompanying drawings, is a specification sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable pering and eyeleting machine, whereby the punching and eyelet-setting operations are performed at the same position and the subsequent feeding forward of the work effected by lateral movement of the top eyelet-setting tool before it is released from the eyelet after clinching the same, thus avoiding the straining or distortions of the holes or any defacement of the work by the feeding operations.
Another object is to provide means for effecting simultaneous lateral movement of the punch and top eyelet-set, irrespective of their upward and downward actions.
Another object is to afford facilities for varying the extent of lateral movement of the top eyelet-set to give greater or less distance of feed, as desired.
'ljhese objects I attain by mechanism such as illustrated and described, the several features of novelty and improvement being more fully hereinafter explained, and the particular subject-matter claimed definitely set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my lmproved machine, with dotted lines i11- dicating the location and arrangement of parts. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, the eyelet-reservoir and upper part of the chute and reservoir-supporting arm being removed the better to illustrate the parts beneath. Fig. 3 is a front elevation view showing the relative location of the punching, setting, and work-holding devices; and Fig. 4: is a transverse section through the fulcrum-joints o the working-levers.
My present improvements can be employed in connection with mechanism described in LettersPatent Nos. 384,190 and 368,875, heretofore granted to me, and as some of the parts employed in my present mechanism have been described and claimed in said previous patents such parts are not herein shown and described in detail.
Referring to the drawings, A denotes the frame of suitable form to support the working parts.
B indicates the operating-shaft mounted to turn in bearings a a on the rear part of the frame, and having fixed thereon the series of cams for actuating the several levers that carry the punching, eyelet-setting, and presser-foot devices; also, provided with a wheel or pulley B for the driving-belt or power'connection.
0 indicates the punch-lever carrying the punching-tool c, fixed to its forward end.
D indicates the lever which carries the an vil or cutter-bed d at its forward end. Said lever D is fulcrumed for lateral swinging action on a vertical axis, and is worked by the cam D The lever C is fulcrumed upon this bed-lever D, as at e, and is worked by the cam O with an upward and downward movement, while it also has lateral movement in unison with the bed-lever D, on which it is mounted in a manner substantially as explained in my former Letters Patent, No. 368,87 5.
F indicates the top set-lever, carrying at its front end the upper eyelet-setting tool or die f. Said lever F is centrally fulcrumed, as at 6 to a laterally-oscillating supporter G, mounted on a vertical axis and provided with an arm g, which is joined by a link h to a connector-lever H, by means of which the supporter and top set-lever are given lateral motion from and simultaneously with the bedlever D, as will be hereinafter more fully explained. The top set-lever F is worked in upward and downward action by the cam F on the operating-sl'laf t. The lower set I is arranged in a vertically-reoiproeating carrierbar I, that is operated by the lower set-lever J, having its fulcrum at e and worked by the cam or eccentric J and link J. The con struction and operation of this bottom eyelet.- ing-set are preferably substantially the same as described in my former patent, No. 368,875.
K indicates the presser-foot lever, f ulcru med on the frame at e" and carrying at its front end the bifurcated presser-foot 7.. Said lever is worked by the cam K with an upward and downward action.
L indicates the eyelet-feed chute, which. to gether with the reservoir-box, is supported in connection with the lever. l, substantially in the manner heretofore employed, and said le- 1 ver is operated by a cam or eccentric L for advancing and retracting the point of the eyelet-feed chute at the proper intervals of action.
The bed-lever D, on which the punch-lever C- is fulcrunied, and the swinging support G, on which the top set-lever F is f ulcru med, can, it in any instance desired, be pivoted or fulcrumed on separate studs or vertical axes; but I prefer to construct and arrange such levers or parts so as to work on a single stud or axis E, as shown in the drawings, so that the punch c and top set f will move in the same are in their lateral action. To accomplish this, the hub of the supporter G is arranged within the hub of the bed-lever D, or vice versa, the pivot or center stud E passing through the axis of the two hubs and supported in the horizontal cross-bar or suitable portion of the frame A.
It will be understood that the several cams are respectively constructed and shaped so as to impart the desired quantity and quality of movement to the respective levers and parts operated thereby and that such cams are relatively disposed upon the shaft 13 in such manner as to bring the punching, eyeleting, holding-foot, and eyelet-feeding devices into action in their proper order and at the required intervals of time. so as to perform the operations of punching the hole, feeding and setting the eyelet, and feeding forward the work at each revolution of the operatingshaft. The lovers are preferably provided each with an anti-friction roll at the end, which rests upon the cam. Such rolls in the case of the punch-lever and top set-lever are best made with spherical surfaces to facilitate ease of action as said levers swing laterally across the face of the cam. The several lovers are respectively provided with springs S for holding, them against their respective cams. Such springs are not, however, shown upon the drawings, Fig. 1, as I have omitted them in order to avoid complication of lines and the better to illustrate the shape and position of the cams and levers.
The connector-lever If is fulcrumed upon a stud H, which passes through a longitudinal slot in said connector-lever, and which is adjustable in a diagonal slot formed in the frame or segment A fixed thereon. Said fulcrumstud is embraced by a slotted hand-lever N, by means of which the position of said ful= crum'stud can be shifted forward or backward at pleasure. The forward end of the connector-lever is pivoted at 712 to the bed-lever D, so that said connector-lever receives lateral swingingaction in unison with said bed-lever, which action is transmitted to the oscillating supporter G and the top set-lever F through the link 71, that connects the rear end of the connector-lever with the arm g of said supporter. By shifting the position of the stud It the proportional leverage of the connector-lever is varied, so that more or less lateral movement is imparted to the top eyelet-set. The lateral movement of the cutterbed and punch is made sufficient to carry them out of the wayof the eyelet-setting tools when the latter are brought together for clinching the eyelet, and the lateral movement of the top set f' is made such as required for the distance of feed or spacing between the eyelets on the work.
The arrangement of the connector-lever in relation to the bed-lever I), top-set-supporter arm g, and the diagonal slot in which the adjustable fulcrum 11' is sustained is such that under all conditions the top eyelet-set willbc brought to a position directly over the lower eyelet-set when moved in one direction, the
variation in the distance of its lateral action being all accomplished at the outer limit or portion of its movement farthest away from the eyelet-setting position,so that the adj ustment or variation of feed does not disarrange the perfect action of the eyelet-setting dies, and the adjustment can be effected while the machine is in operation by simply shifting the hand-lever N backward or forward. The hand-lever N is provided with oppositely-directed latching-dogs n, that engage notches or teeth at the edge of the segment A Said dogs are furnished with handles a and springs a as illustrated in Fig. 2. hen the handle is gripped, the dogs are released from the notches and are pressed into engagement therewith when the handle is released. Aseries of perforations m is best formed in the segment to receive stop-pins, against which the hand-lever N can be moved for indicating any fixed degree of adjustment. The handlever is in the present instance fulcrumed to swing about the same axis as does the bed-lever D and top set-lever and its supporter G, but if in anyinstance preferred might have an independent fulcrum at any convenient position. The table or plate 1 for supporting the work can be substantially the same as that heretofore employed.
In the operation, commencing with the parts in position substantially as shown in the drawings, the punch c is forced down to form a hole in the leather or fabric \V. It then rises and swings laterally toward the right. At the same time the top eyelet-set f swings toward the right, while the work or fabric is held firmly down upon the table P by the prcsser-foot The lower eyelet-set in the meantime moves upward and takes an eye- ICC lot from the end of the eyelet-feed chute L upon the picker-pin i, and said chute is retracted. The top setfias it comes into position above the lower set L, is depressed, so that its point enters the hole previously punched in the work,and receives the eyelet as the lower set rises and meets it, the pickerpin '6 being forced down within the lower set in the usual well-known manner, and the eyelet is clinched or upset by the upper and lower setting-dies closingtogether. The lower eyelet-set L then descends to normal position, while the top set f remains with its point through the eyelet, and while the presser-foot is lifted to release the Work the top eyeletset f is moved laterally toward the left, carrying with it the work or fabric and giving the required amount of advancement or feed to bring the work into position for the punch to make another hole before said top set is released from the eyelet, the presser-foot being depressed upon the work before the top eyelet-set is elevated. This method of feeding forward the work by means of the top set before it is released from the eyelet is a feature of my invention and affords the advantage of accuracy of feed and the avoidance of distorting or stretching the holes by the operation of feeding, the fabric when light or thin material is operated upon.
I claim as my invention herein to be socured by Letters Patent- 1. In a punching and eyeleting machine, the combination of the laterally-swinging bedlever, the vertically-swinging punch -lever mounted thereon, a vertically and laterally movable top set-lever carrying the top eyelet-set, and a connector-lever and connections between the top set-lever and bed-lever, substantially as described, whereby lateral motion is transmitted from said bed-lever to said top set-lever, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a punching and eyeleting machine, the combination, substantially as described, of the laterally-swinging bed-lever fulcrumed on a fixed axis, the punch-lever fulcrumed on said bed-lever for upward and downward action, the top set-lever carrying the top eyeletset, the oscillating supporter for said top set-lever, the connector-lever and link joining said bed-lever and supporter, the adjustable fulcrum for said connector-lever, the fulcrumadjusting hand-lever, and the series of cams for imparting motion to said bed-lever, punchlever, and top set-lever, as set forth.
In a punching and eyelet-setting niachinc, the laterally swinging bed-lever having the punch-lever fulcrumed thereon, the laterally-oscillating supporter having the top set-lever fulcrumed thereon, in combination with a single axis or center stud whereon said bed-lever and supporter are arranged to swing, a connection for transmitting motion from said bed-lever to said top-set-lever supporter, the punching and eyelet-setting tools, and means, substantially as described, for imparting motion to the several levers, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a punching and eyeleting machine, the adjustable fulcrum-stud H and the handlever N for shifting said stud, the slotted frame, and slotted connector-lever H, in combination with bed-lever D, punch-lever C, 0scillating supporter G, top set'lever F, link It, and lever-operating mechanism, substantially as described.
5. In a punching and eyeleting machine having a slotted lever with an adjustable fulcruln for varying the distance of the Workfeed, the combination of the fulcrum-shifting hand-lever, the stationary notched or toothed segment, and the oppositely-directed dogs or pawls engaging the toothed edge of said segment, pivoted to the hand-lever and provided with handles and springs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. In a punching and eyeleting machine, the combination, substantially as set forth, of the laterally-swinging bed-lever and punchlever carrying the punching-tools, the laterally and vertically movable top set-lever carrying the top eyelet-set, its oscillating supporter, the connector-lever and link joining said bed-lever and supporter, the presser-lever and presser-foot, the work-table, the lower eyelet-set, its operating-lever and the operating-shaft, and the series of actuating-cams fixed thereon for moving the several levers, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
