IMPROVEMENT. IN SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming` part of Letters Paten-t No. 44,332, dated September 10, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, T. L. MELONE, ot' Granville, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the aocompanying drawings, forming part ot" this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical section ot a machine with my improvements, taken at right angles to the shuttle-race and parallel with the needle-arm. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same with the cover of the shuttle-race removed. Fig. 3 is a left-hand side View ofthe shuttle-race and feeding-dog.

The principal object of my invention is to simplify and reduce the cost ot' the shuttle sewing-machine. l
It consists in a novel construction an arrangement ofthe mechanism for operating the needle, the shuttle, and the feeding device, whereby the number or" the parts of the machine is reduced, its construction simplified, and the machine enabled to bedriven with less power.
It also consists in making the shuttle-race and feed-bar of one piece, or, in other words, in the employment, t'or feeding the material to be sewed, ot' a longitudinally-niovable shuttlerace, thereby reducing the number ot' parts of the machine.`

low this bed the driving-shaft B is arranged in an upright position directly under the shuttie-driver and near the middle of the shuttlerace, the said shaft being supported at the bottom on a center bearing, a, and Working of the said lever to which the needle is attached, and the endotl the arm H, by which motion is received from the arm D, both have to be on one side ofthe rock-shaft d, to which the said lever is secured, and one arm has to be over the other; and in order to balance the said lever, or prevent all its Weight from coniing on one side of'the said rock-shaft, the connection of the said arms is extended in the form of a bow on the opposite side ofthe said rock-shaft, as shown at I in Fig. 2, by which means the necessity for lifting the whole weight ofthe said arms to raise theneedle is obviated, and the machine is enabled to work more easily and steadily and with less labor on the part of the operator.
The shuttle-driver J is substantially of the usual construction. lt is fitted to slide freely a stationary horizontal bar, lc, secured below the-cloth bed A,dircctly over the shaft B, and has firmly secured to it a slotted yoke, c, which receives the crank or eccentric Wrist-pin c. The form ot' the slot in this yoke is such that the said pin c, working in it, Will produce the desired movement. ot' the shuttle.
Lis the shuttle-race, made substantially ot' the usual fornnand arranged in the usual position; but, instead of being stationary,it is fitted to slide longitudinally in or attached to the cloth-bed A a distance equal tothe greatest length otl feed required. lhe shuttle-race thus arranged serves also as the feed-bar. It has applied to it al spring,f, which tends to press it back in the opposite direction to the feed movement, and a stop-screw, g, which limits the point to which it is pressed back by the said spring. This spring and stop-screw'are substantially like7the spring and stop-screw commonly applied to the feed-bar.

In consequence of the longitudinal Inovement given to the shuttle-race, the width of the `grooves kl provided therein for the reception of the needle and the loops of the needle-thread requires to be as much greater than the Width of the needle as thelength ofthe said longitudinal movement.
The band-wheel C, needle-operating-eain D, fly-Wheel E, and feed-Cam F, instead of being made ofa single casting, as described, may be made of separate pieces; but I prefer to make them all ot' one casting, as a great saving of labor is thereby effected. p

The main driving-shaft B, arranged vert-ically below the shuttle-driver and near the raoeway, and in relation to the needle-arm and shuttle-driver substantially as herein speoied, the same containing thereon, and the whole `oastin one piece, the band-wheel, needle-operating cam, ily-Wheel, and feed-ouin, substantially as herein speeitied.
2. The employment, for feeding the material to be sewed, of a feeding-dog, attached to and receivingits forward and baol; movements from a reciprocating shuttlerace, substantially as and l'or the purpose herein specified.
