JULIUS STIENEN, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO FANNY STIENEN, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINATION SOFA AND CONV ERSATION-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,301, dated December 23, 1890. Application filed March 12, 1890. Serial No. 343,616. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs STIENEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain.
new and useful Improvements in a Combination Sofa and Conversation-Chair, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a combined sofa and conversationchair which can be readily changed from a sofa to a conversation-chair and back again to a sofa; and the invention consists of a combined sofa and conversation-chair composed of a supportingframe and two independent seats having backs, one seat being centrally pivoted to the supporting-frame while the other seat is guided laterally in ways of the same and connected with the axially-turning seat by a suitable mechanism, so as to impart by the turning of the pivoted seat a reciprocating motion to the sliding seat and permit thereby the change from a sofa to a conversation-chair, and vice versa.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent perspective views of my improved combined sofa and conversationchair, showing the same respectively in position as a sofa and as a conversation-chair. Figs. 3 and 5 show plan views of the seat-frames, corresponding to the positions of the seats shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the seatframes 1n the act of being moved from one position into the other, and Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 3, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the supporting-frame of my improved combination sofa and conversation-chair. On the supporting-frame A are arranged two seats B B, which are provided with fixed backs O and The frame I) of the seat B is pivoted to a transverse brace a of the supporting-frame A, so as to be capable of turning axially on the pivot a. The frame I) of the seat B is guided by lugs d in suitable ways (1 cl of the supporting-frame A, so that it may be moved longitudinally on the same.
The frame I) of ,the seat B is connected by a pivot-rod D with a center pivot e of the frame I) of the seat B, said connecting-rod being pivoted eccentrically to the frame of the seat B, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, so that when the seat B is turned on its axis the seat B is reciprocated on its guideways, as shown in Fig. 4, and thereby a sufficient space provided for permitting the turning of the seat B on its axis until its back arrives at the opposite side of the supporting-frame A. As the back approaches this position the connectingrod D moves the seat B back again into its normal position until it arrives finally alongside of the seat B, so as to form a so-called conversation-chair, as shown clearly in Fig. 5.
In place of the connecting-rod D, extending from one seat-frame to the other, any other equivalent mechanism by which reciprocat= ing motion is imparted to the sliding chair may be used.
By returning the seat B back into its original position the conversation-chair is changed back into a sofa.
During the axial motion of the seat B the seat B is moved away from the seat B, so as not to interfere with the turning of the same, and finally returned again into position alongside of the seat B, so that there is no interference between the seats when the change of position from the sofa to the chair, and vice versa, is made, and'therebya simple and convenient conversation-chair and sofa obtained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. The combination, with a supportingframe, of two seats having fixed backs, one seat being centrally pivoted to the supporting-frame, so as to turn on its axis thereon, while the other seat is reciprocated in Ways of the supporting-frame, and mechanism for connecting the frames of the seats, so that on turning one seat on its axis the other seat is moved out of the way of the axially-turning seat and returned to its former position sidewise of the same, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a supporting- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as frame having a transverse brace near the end my invention I have signed my name in presand longitudinal guideways at the other end, ence of two subscribing Witnesses.
of two seats having fixed backs, one seat be- 5 ing centrally pivoted to the transverse brace, JULIUS S'JIENEN.
while the other seat is guided in said ways, and a conl'iecting-rod that is pivoted centrally Witnesses: to the frame of the reciprocating seat and PAUL GOEPEL, eeeentrieally to the axially-turning seat, sub- W. REIMHERR.
IO stantially as set forth.
