UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
DAVID S. ABBOTT, OF OLEAN, NEIV YORK.
sAwlNe-MACHINI-z.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,231, dated December 23, 1890.
Application tiled January 17, 1890. Serial No. 337,219. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID S. ABBOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olean, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Sawing-Machine, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention has relation to improvements in swinging jacks for the support of circular saws in wood-sawing machines, where in the saw is swung to and from the object to be sawed.
Among the objects of the invention are to provide a simple strong jack so mounted and guided as to be moved squarely and without tremor toward the object to be sawed, to obviate all vibrations of'any kind, and to maintain the central line of the saw-mandrel at a perfect right angle with the path of the jack.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and thc novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a jack constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of the jack, the table being removed.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The table 1 of the machine is in this instance supported by the usual standards 2, which are connected by a curved guide-bar 7, accurately planed, so that its opposite sides are in perfect parallelism. The outline of the bar 7 is concentric with the shaft 4, upon which the jack is mounted, and said jack comprises the usual vertical bars 5, having openings 3 at their lower ends, through which the shaft 4 is passed, and connected at intervals by cross-bars 6. The jack has its opposite bars 5 provided at their upper ends with bearings 10, in which is journaled the sawarbor l1, carrying the saw 12 and the pulley 13. One of the side bars of the jack is loand below said guide-bar is provided with a cross-head 8, projecting at either side of the jack. The ends of the cross-head S are provided with pairs of plates 9, each pair of plates embracing the guide-bar 7 and having close contact therewith.
The operation of my invention and-its numerous advantages will at once be apparent. The wood to be cut, it will be understood, is mounted upon the table 1 and the jack swung upon the counter-shaft, so that the saw 12 is carried to the wood, said jack and saw being guided in an absolutely straight line to vand through the Wood and Without any vibrations whatever.
In order to rigidly connect the cross-head with the jack and thus prevent any vibrations of either, I provide an opposite pair of diagonal braces 14, having their outer ends,
bolted at 15 to the upper cross-bar 6 of the jack, and their opposite ends bolted, as at 1G, to the cross-'head 8.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination, with the table, the opposite supporting-legs, and the base connecting the legs, of the fixed bearings Inounted upon the base, the rock-shaft mounted therein, the opposite side bars terminating in bearings and connected by suitable cross-pieces, the arbor mounted in the bearings at the upper ends of said bars, the saw thereon and located at one side of one of said side bars, the curved guide-bar 7, of a uniform width and thickness throughout its length and formed upon a circle concentric with the said shaft,
`and a head secured to the side bar adjacent to the guide and embracing said guide, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
DAVID S. ABBOTT. Witnesses:
A. C. HATCH, J. P. JOHNSON.
