STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,217, dated December :23, 1890.

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. BINNIX, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Seabrook, in the county of Prince Georges and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in' Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved steamboiler, which, according to its construction, is a combined fine and tubular and sectional boiler; and the object of my invention is to provide an improved construction which, when combined with boilers now in use, will greatly in crease their efficiency.
My invention consists in providing certain novel constructions and combinations, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically designated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved boiler,a portion of the furnace and its brick-setting being broken away. Fig. 2 is a front end view, and Fig. 3 a sectional view.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate like parts.
In carrying out my invention I employ the usual boiler-settings A, together with the face-plate a, grate a, and bridge-wall a all of which may be of any well-known structure. The boiler B, which rests upon the setting, may also be of any approved pattern; but it is preferred to employ the usual form of firetube boiler, such as shown in the drawings, having the fire-tubes B. At the forward end of the boiler B is arranged a depending section or leg 0, which may be either integral with or separable from the boiler B.
At the rear end of the furnace and a short distance from the rear end of the boiler proper is arranged a rear section D, said section being constructed of the front and rear plates (Z and d, respectively, and the side top plates d riveted in the usual manner, the rear plate being provided with a series of hand-bolts and covers (1 arranged in a manner and for a purpose hereinafter specified. The height of the rear section D is preferably greater than the height of the boiler proper and its depending section combined, and said rear section is so arranged that the top surface of the same is in horizontal alignment with the top surface of the boiler proper, and it is also preferred to have the top portion of said section correspond in form as near as possible with that port-ion of the boiler adjacent thereto.
Connecting the front depending section or leg 0 and the lower portion of the rear section D is a series of horizontal tubes E, arranged as shown, and connecting the rear end of the boiler B and the upper port-ion of the section D is a series of horizontal tubes F.
G and G indicate blow-off cocks connected, respectively, with the front and rear sections C and D. The rear section D, being much longer than the front section or leg 0, its lower front plate d will present a smooth surface, which serves as a deflecting-plate to force the heated products of combustion up between the rear end of the boiler and the upper portion of said section and also through the fire-tubes b in the boiler proper, said heated products passing through said tubes and out through the flue Z); or, if desired, they may be returned to the fire-box and totally consumed. Each hand-hole and cover d is arranged opposite one of the tubes E or F, so that should one of said tubes become impaired it can easilybe removed through said hand-hole and another replaced, thus enabling the boiler to be repaired at any time.
In a boiler constructed as described there is a continuous circulation of the Water through the boiler 13, forward section 0, tubes E, rear section D, and tubes F, and steam can be generated in a very short time, the tubes E being exposed directly to the heat of the fire-box and the rear section also. Said section acts also as a deflector, and tends to more quickly superheat any steam that may be present in the tubes E and upper portions of the boiler B and section D.
The mud-drum usually employed is dispensed with and no additional deflectingplate is necessary. The main advantage of my construction, however, is that it can be quickly and conveniently attached to all classes of steam-boilers now in use. The circulation of the water is shown by the arrows having plain stems, and that of the heated products of combustion by the arrows having feathered stems.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a steam-boiler, the combination, with the boiler proper, of the depending forward section or leg, the rear section of a height greater than the combined heights of the boiler and depending forward section, the top surface of the rear section being arranged in horizontal alignment with the top surface of the boiler, a series of horizontal tubes connecting the forward and rear sections, and a series of horizontal tubes connecting the rear section and the boiler, substantially as described.
2. In a steam-boiler, the combinatiomwith the boiler proper, of the depending forward section and the rear section, said rear section being of a height greater than the combined heights of the boiler and forward section and having its top surface arranged in horizontal alignment with the top surface of the boiler and its rear surface provided with a series of handholes and covers, arranged as described, a series of horizontal tubes connecting the forward and rear sections, and a series of horizontal tubes connecting the rear section and boiler proper, substantially as and for the purpose described.
