Description
- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCPtOLL-SAWINGy MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,304, dated September 20, 1864.
To a/ZZ whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW HANAUER, of Covington, in the county of Kenton and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved VScr'oll-Sawing Machine 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front sectional view of my invention, taken in the line :t x, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section of the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. l; Fig. 3, a vertical section of a portion of the same, taken in the line z z, Fig. l; Fig. 4, a horizontal section of a portion of the same, taken in the line w Fig. l; Fig. 5, a horizontal section of a portion of the same, taken in the line y y', Fig. l Fig. 6, a longitudinal central section of the pitIna-n pertaining to the same; Fig. 7, an enlarged view of one end of a lever and a connecting-rod pertaining to the invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in the employment or use of levers connected by rods and saws, the levers working on central fulcrurnpins, and one of the levers having its fulcruln-pin fitted in adjustable boxes, so that said lever, by means of certain mechanism hereinafter described, may be adjusted to strain the saws.
The invention also consists :in a peculiarity of construction of the pitman which communicates motion to the saws, by which construction the journals on which the pitman is f1tted may always be kept in a properly lubricated state.
A represents a framing to which a portion 4 of the machinery is attached, and B is a table on which the plank or stuff to be sawed is placed.
U is a lever which is fitted centrally ona rock shaft, D, placed transversely in the lower part of the framing or support E of the table B, a-nd F is a driving-shaft, which is also placed in the lower part of E, parallel with the rock-shaft D, and having a crankpulley, G, on its inner end, and a driving-pulley, H, on its outer end.
In the framing A, directly over the table B, there is placed a lever, I, which is precisely similar to the lever O, and is in the same vertical plane with it. The fulcrum-shaft a of the lever I has its bearings in boxes b b, which 'are fitted in vertical slots c c and allowed to slide freely therein. The boxes b b rest on cams J J, placed one at the front and the other at the rear side of the post d, in which the boxes b b are fitted, said cams being fitted on a shaft, e, and the front cam having a lever, K, connected to it, which extends down and works over a rack, L, on the lower part of d, which holds the cams J in position. By adjusting thislliever K the lever I may be raised for the purpose of straining the saws. The upper lever, I, has rods M M attached to its ends by pivots f, the latter passing through horizontal oblong slots g in the upper ends of the rods M, as shown clearly in Fig. 7. The lower ends of the rods M M are connected to vertical slides N N, which are fitted in guides O O, attached to the framing A, said guides, as well as the slides, being provided with oblique sides, as shown in Fig. 4.
I) P are the saws, the upper ends of which are connected to the slides N N, the lower ends being connected to similar slides, Q Q, which are tted in guides It R, attached to the under side of the table B, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The slides Q Q are connected by rods S S to the ends of the lower lever, C. Ihus it will be seen that two saws are employed in one and the same machine, and that both saws are made to face the front side of the machine, and the operators therefore work side by side, one to each saw, without interfering with each other. Each saw P works in a guide, T, which is at the lower end of a slide. rIhese slides are fitted in the guides 0 O, directly back of the slides N N, and the slides U may be retained at any desired point by set-screws ax.
V represents a pitman which is connected with the crank-pulley G and with the slide Q, which is directly above the crank-pulley. This pitman V is tubular, and it is filled with hemp or any suitable fibrous or absorbent materia-l bx, which will contain oil and serve to keep the journals GX, on which the ends of the pitman work, properly lubricated at al1 times. (See Fig. 6.) This is an important feature, for the pitman necessarily operates so rapidly in a scroll-sawing machine that its iournals require to be kept perfectly lubricated in order to prevent wear.
On the shaft a of the upper lever, I, there is placed loosely a ratchet, W, with which a pawl, dx, engages, and to the shaft a the inner end of a coil-spring, X, is attached, the outer end of said spring beingv connected to the ratchet W. This spring is designed to be Wound up and used when only one saw is einployed. In this case it serves to equalize the movement of the levers C I and insure a smooth action ofthe same, avoidingjars and concussions.
The saws P P are kept in a proper state of tension by adj listing the upper lever, I, through the medium of the cams J J, as previously referred to.
y I would remark that the slides N Q may be made of two longitudinal parts, connected by set-screws, so that they may be expanded, when necessary, in order to compensate for wear and thereby prevent unnecessary play ofthe same and consequent wear and tear.
The oblong slots g in the upper ends of the rods M admit of a lateral sliding of the latter to compensate for the combined movement of the lever I.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The two levers G I, in combination with the two saws P P, and connecting-rods M S and slides M Q, arranged to operate in the manner, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The adjusting of the upper lever, I, through the medium of the cams J J, for the purpose of straining the saws, as herein specified.
3. The tubular pit'man c, provided with fibrous or absorbent llin g bx, for the purpose herein set forth.
ANDREW HANAUER.
