STEAM-GENERATING ATTACHMENT FOR GAS OR GASOLINE BURNERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 4 12,1317, dated December 9, 1890. Application filed December 12, 1889. Serial No. 333,497. (No model.)
To all 1072,0122 it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, JOHN HILTON, of Fort Atkinson, in the county of Jefferson and State of \Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generating Attachments for Gas or Gasoline Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a steam-generating chamber to be used in connection with an ordinary gasoline or gas burner of a stove, through and by which steam may be generated and conducted to a separate oven or heating-chamber for cooking and heating purposes, while the same burner may be simultaneously used in the ordinary way with the thereon -supported cooking utensils, thereby utilizing a much larger percentage of the heat generated by such burner and greatly increasing the working capacity of the stove.
The construction of my invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side view thereof, part in section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged top View of the steam-chamber, part in section, in connection with the burner with which it used; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the oven drawn on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

- A is an ordinary gasoline-burner, which is connected with an elevated gasoline-reservoir (not shown) by the vertical supportingpipe B, horizontal pipe O, and vertical pipe D.
E is an oven of ordinary construction, which, if desired, may be simultaneously heated by a burner located therein, which is supplied with gasoline through the pipe 0.
Surrounding the burner A is an annular steam generator or chamber F, which is sup plied with water from the water-reservoir G through the duct II. The reservoir Gis preferably of considerable size, so as to contain water for general use in a house, which water, on account of the proximity of the burner to the reservoir, will become more or less warmed and maybe taken from the reservoir when desired. The reservoir G is, however, so located that its upper portion is considerably above the discharging end of the duct 11 in the chamber F, so that when the reservoir is nearly full of water, as it should always be when my device is in use, the water will flow therefrom of its own gravity into the steam-generator, and will thereby be retained at the desired height in such generator without liability of overflowing into the upper end of the steam-pipe I, the end of which in the chamber F is very near the top of the chamber and higher than the mouth of the duct H.
The steam generated in the steam-ch amber F is conducted therefrom through the steampipe I to the oven or heating-chamber J, in which cooking is accomplished by the direct action of the steam therein. A part of the steam in the chamber J escapes through the joints about the door,notwithstanding it is packed with rubber, and another part is condensed therein and in the transmitting-pipe I; but the steam is not at any time raised in the chamber F to a sufl'lcient pressure to prevent the free flow by gravity of the water from reservoir G into the chamber F.
K is an oven or compartment formed in connection with the heating-chamber J, to which heat is transmitted indirectly from the steam in the lower oven J through the intermediate wall or partition L. The lower compartment or steam-chamber .I is provided with a closely-fitting door M, which is preferably provided with a closely-fitting elastic packing N, which is secured to the door or the seat of the door upon the oven in the ordinary manner, and forms a closely-fitting joint which prevents the escape of steam.
The upper surface of the reservoir F is provided with a series of radial ribs or flanges O, which project slightly above the reservoir and serve as bearings for the cooking utensil, which is supported thereon above the burner A.
It is obvious that by thus locating the steam generator or chamber F around or upon the sides of the gasoline-burner upon the same plane therewith, instead of above it,

whereby the upper surface of the burner 'is entirely open and unobstructed, said burner may, while generating steam in the steamchamber at its side, be simultaneously used with all ordinary cooking utensils, which may be supported thereon in the ordinary way, thereby utilizing a larger percentage of the heat generated by such burner, and greatly increasing the working capacity of the stove, as the steam generated may be conducted away and used for baking orother purposes, While provisionQmay be cooked in cooking utensils from the direct contact with the flame.
