UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NETTIE E. JENKINS, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
COMPIEEXION MASK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,009, dated. November 18, 1890.
Application filed July 31,1890. SerialNo. 360,542. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NETTIE E. JENKINS, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Complexion Masks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improved article of apparel especially adapted for beneficial treatment of the skin, and has for its object to construct a medicated mask or glove of purely vegetable substances, which when worn will tend to heal, purify, soften, and beautify the skin.
A further object of the invention is to construct the article of a compound possessing all the merits of rubber, of which material the majority of complexion masks have been made, yet free from the numerous disadvantages attendant upon the use of such material.
Another object of the invention is to provide a means whereby tie-strings may be securely attached to a mask without causing inconvenience to the wearer.
The invention consists of a mask or suitable device made from a composite material; and the invention further consist-s in the composite material of which the said mask is made.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure represents a front elevation of a mask made in accordance with the invention.
The material from which the mask or gloves is made consists of the following ingredients, compounded in substantially the proportions specified, namely: sulphate of cinchonia, onehalf ounce; salicylic acid, two drams; Turkey myrrh, one-half ounce; hydrastin, one=half dram; benzoic acid, one -half dram; caoutchouc, two pounds; sulphur, one and threefourth ounce. The ingredients, with the exception of the caoutchouc, are thoroughly mixed and sifted over the caoutchouc by a milling process-for instance, while the latter material is being passed between heated rollers. The finished material is rolled in sheets of proper thickness, and from said sheets the mask or glove or other article is made. If in practice it is found desirable, a
pigment may be added to the composition in suflicient quantities for imparting only alight tint.
In the construction of the mask 10, tabs 11 are formed integral with its sides, two tabs being preferably located at the top of the mask, two at its center, and two at or near the lower end, as represented in the drawing. The tabs serve as a means for attaching the tiestrings or elastics 12 to the mask, and the said tie=strings or elastics are preferably sewed to the tabs, as illustrated, although they may be attached thereto by eyelets, rivets, or
equivalent fastening devices.
By aflixing to or forming the tabs upon the mask any roughened surface created by the attachment of the draw-strings or elastics is brought a considerable distance rearward upon the face, and is thereby less liable to be a source of annoyance to the wearer of the mask. A further advantage consists in the fact that the strings are not so liable to be torn away from the mask, thereby interfering with its usefulness.
Unlike other articles manufactured for a similar purpose, masks or gloves made in accordance with my formula are not only sudorific, but tonic and alterative, and the ingredients are so compounded and the articles so constructed that they are not decomposed and destroyed by the secretions from the skin, as all rubber goods must be. The masks and gloves above described are flexible, elastic, and durable, and the vegetable substances from which they are made can not possibly produce any injurious effect upon the skin.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a mask, glove, or equivalent covering for the skin, constructed of a flexible material composed of sulphate of cinchonia, salicylic acid, Turkey myrrh, hydrastin, benzoic acid, caoutchouc, and sulphur, in substantially the proportions specified.
2. A material for the construction of articles of apparel adapted as a covering for the skin, comprising the following ingredients: sulphate of cinchonia, salicylic acid, Turkey myrrh, hydrastin, benzoic acid, caoutchouc, and sulphur, substantially in the proportions set forth.
NETTIE E. JENKINS.
