(No Model.)
J. A. GUINN. FIRE EXTINGUISHER.
No. 440,630. Patented Nov. 18,1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. GUINN, OF PERRY, IOWA.
FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent 1\T0. 440,630, dated November 18, 1890.
Application filed April 14, 1890. Serial No. 347,926- (No model) To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. GUINN, of Per ry, in the county of Dallas, in the State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Extinguishing Fires in Railroad0ar Stoves in Cases of Accident; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same.
This invention relates to automatic fire extinguishers.
The object of the invention is to produce a device whereby upon the upsetting, derailing, or other serious accident to a railway-car the fire in the stove will be instantly extinguished.
With this object in view the invention re sides in a fire-extinguisher for car=heaters, consisting in the combination, with a tank containing alkali, an acid bottle supported within said tank, a weight supported above said bottle by a coiled spring, said spring being adapted to support the weight out of contact with the bottle during the ordinary motions of the car, but on the occurrence of an unusual shock to allow the same to descend and break the bottle, and suitable connections between the tank and the heater.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which like figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a tank containing my device, the same being connected to an ordinary car-stove. Fig. 2 is an enlarged View in section of my device, and Fig. 8 is an enlarged view of the weight and the bottle for containing acid.
In the drawings, 1 represents a car-stove, and 2 a tank containing alkali, which is connected to the stove through the pipe 3.
4 is an upright or stand-pipe, on the top of which is supported a glass bottle 6 containing acid.
7 is a cup supported from the upright 5 by a coil-spring 8, stiff enough to take up the ordinary jarring motion of the car. 8% is a flanged ball-weight, connected by a chain 9 to the glass bottle 6, so that should the train meet with an accident-a severe crash or an overturn the ball-weight 8% will be thrown from its cup, and, directed by the chain, break the bottle 6, and mixing the acid with the chemicals surrounding it in the tank causing the gases and fluid to rush in on the fire through pipe 3, thus extinguishing it.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a fire-extinguisher for car-heaters, the combination of a tank containing alkali, an acid-bottle supported within said tank, a flanged weight supported above said bottle by a coiled spring, said spring being adapted to support the weight out of contact with the bottle during the ordinary motions of the car, but on the occurrence of unusual shocks to allow the same to descend and break the bottle, and suitable connections between the tank and the heater, substantially as described.
JOHN A. GUINN.
