BOLT-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,992, dated October 21, 1890.
Application filed April 21, 1890. Serial No. 348,765. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it'known that I, OHARLEs L. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ocllinsville, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Bolt-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in bolt-holders.
The object of the present invention is to provide a bolt-holder which will be simple and inexpensive in construction and adapted to hold a bolt of a tire, plowshare, or the like while a nut is being screwed on or off.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bolt-holder embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the boltholder applied in operative position to a wheel, the latter being shownin section. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the link.
Referring "to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a lever constructed of suitable metal, preferably iron, and provided at one end with a handle 2 and at the other end with a steel point 3, and having intermediate of its ends a series of teeth 4, which are shouldered in one direction and adapt-ed to be engaged by a link 5, thatloosely connects a hook 6 with the lever. The steel point 3 is provided with a chisel-edge 7 to engage the head of the bolt, and it is adapted to hold the same whether round or square, and the end 8 of the hook is steel and engages the lower face of the felly or similar article having the bolt operated upon, and the said end. 8 is preferably oval, and the felly may be arranged in the opening of the hook, if convenient and desirable. The end 9 of the hook is provided with an eye to receive the link, and the latter 5 has the inner edge 10 of one of its ends oppositely beveled to provide an edge adapted to readily engage the notches between the teeth, and the said hook may be readily adjusted longitudinally along the lever to enable the bolt-holder to readily fit and engage the artiv cle operated upon. The hook is constructed of steel, and the lever isprovided with a guard or keeper 11, which is constructed of suitable material, preferably wire, and has its ends secured in perforations 12 of the lever, and the said guard or keeper prevents the link and hook becoming separated from the lever.
The bolt-holder is adapted to engage a bolt and prevent the latter turning, and enables a nut to be unscrewed, or vice versa, and will hold a bolt and prevent the same turning even if sufficient force be exerted upon the nut to twist and break the bolt, and it will readily be seen that the device is simple and inexpensive in construction, and is adapted to be readily adjusted to any article, whether wood or metal.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will readily be understood.
What I claim is- A bolt-holder comprising the lever having one end chisel-pointed to engage the head of a bolt and provided witha series of teeth, the guardhaving its ends secured at the ends of the series of teeth, the hook provided at one end with an eye and having at the other end a head, and the link confined to the lever by the guard and secured in the eye of the hook and provided at one end with a beveled edge to engage the teeth of the lever, substantially as described.
