UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS L. UROMER AND CHARLES SCHU\VlRTll, OF OLMUS, TEXAS.
SEED-PLANTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,774, dated October 7, 1890.
Application filed April 14, 1890.
Serial No. 347,856 (No model.)
T0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, THOMAS L. CROMER and CHARLES SCHUWIRTH, citizens of the United States, residing at Olmus, in the county of Guadalupe and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Seed-Planter for Planting Corn, Cotton, and other Seeds, of.
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a seed-planter for planting corn, cotton, and other seeds; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall be simple, inexpensive, and efficient in operation.
The invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a seed-planter embodying our improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is avertical transverse sectional view taken on the line y y in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line a: a: in Fig. 2.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
Our invention is in the nature of an attachment which may be readily applied to any plow or f u rrow'opening device having a stock or beam of ordinary construction, and in the drawings 1 designates a plow-beam, 2 the standard,3 the blade or furrow-opener, and 4 4 the handles, of a plow such as is ordinarily used.
5 designates a plate, upon the rear end of which is mounted a box or hopper 6. Said plate is secured upon the upper side of the plowbeam by means of clips 7, which connect it with a bottom plate 8, which is clamped by means of the same clips upon the under side of the plow-beam, and which is provided at its front end with aboX or bearing 9, in which is journaled a transverse shaft or axle 10. The latter at its outer ends carries the supporting and operating wheels 11, which are firmly secured upon the said axle. The hub of each of said wheels is provided on diametricallyopposite sides with metallic loops or stirrups 12, connecting said hubs with the axle and serving to actuate the operating-lever, as will be presently described. The operating-stirsaid lever are provided with brackets 16, ex-
tending, respectively, in a forward and rearward direction from the fulcra of said lever and terminating in downwardly-extending curved arms 17, that lie in the paths of the stirrup 12. It will be observed that when the machine is in operation the stirrups 12, engaging the curved arms 17, serve to impart a vibratory movement to the upwardly-extending lever 14.
The sides of the seed-box G'are provided with bearings for a transverse crank-shaftlS, the portion of which located within the seedbox is provided with agitators 19 and with fingers 20, which in operation serve to force the contents of the hopper out through the longitudinal slot 21 in the bottom of the latter. The slot 21, which is located to one side of the beam 1, may be regulated as to size by means of suitable slides 22, or it may be closed entirely by means of the said slides.
One side of the seed-box is provided with an inclined bottom plate 23, serving to guide the contents of the box in the direction of the slot 21.
The seed-box is also provided with a longitudinal' movable reciprocating seed-slide 24, having seed cups or openings 25, which may be made to register with an opening 26 in the bottom of the seed-box.
Suitably arranged above the seed-slide 24, and directly above the opening 26, isa brush or cut-off 27.
The openings 21 and 26 communicate with the seed-spout 28, which is attached to the under. sides of the seed-box, and which terminates in rear of the furrow-opener.
The upper end of the operating-lever 14 has a Vertical slot 29, in which may be adj ustably pivoted the front end of a connecting-rod 30, the rear end of which may be connected pivotally either with the crank at the outer end of the shaft 18 or with the front end of the reciprocating seed-slide 24;. In this manner seed-slide 24 by simply making the proper adjustment of the connecting-rod.
31 designates the cover, which consists of a scraping-blade attached to the lower end of a pair of arms 32, which are coiled around a transverse rod 33, arranged under the plowbeam in rear of the standard. From thence the said arms are extended upwardly along the sides of the plow-beam and are connected above the latter. In this manner a clip is formed by means of which the scraper is conveniently attached to the plow-beam, at the same time, owing to the spring-coils 35, formed by the portions of the arms 32 which are coiled around the transverse rod 33, the scraper has sufficient elasticity to operate evenly and efficiently. When desired, this covering device may be detached and standards having covering-plows of ordinary construction substituted therefor.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of our invention will be readily understood. The'construction is simple, durable, and inexpensive, and the seeding attachment, which may be readily attached to an ordinary plow, may be used for planting different varieties of seeds. Said seeding attachment may also be easily regulated as to the quantity of seeds which it may be desired to deposit at each operation.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is 1. The combination of the plow beam or stock, the top plate having the seed-box at its rear end, the bottom plate, the connectingclips, the transverse axle journaled in aboaring at the front end of the bottom plate, the operating-wheels having stirrups, the operating lever having downwardly extending curved arms adapted to be alternately engaged by said stirrups, and a pivoted adjustable rod connecting the upper end of said operating-lever with the seeding mechanism, substantially as set forth.
2. In a seeder, the combination of the plow beam having the standard and furrow-opener, the top plate having the seed-box provided with a downwardly-extending spout terminating in rear of the furrow-opener, the bottom plate, the connecting-clips, the transverse shaft or axle journaled in a box at the front end of the bottom plate and having the operating-wheels and stirrups, the bifurcated operating-lever mounted upon bearings extending laterally from the front plate and having forwardly and rearwardly extending brackets provided with curved arms extending downwardly in the paths of the stirrups, and a pivoted adjustable rod connecting the .upper end of the operating-lever with the seeding mechanism, substantially as set forth. In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed out signatures in presence of two witnesses. THOMAS L. CROMER.
