UNITED STATES PATENT O EIcE.
GEORGE J. H. GOEHLER, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE (CAR SAFE COMPANY, LIMITED, OF SAME PLACE.
SAFE-DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,411, dated September 16, 1890.
Application filed May 15, 1890- Serial No. 351,916. (No model.)
. To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. H. GOEHLER, of Bulfalo,in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Doors for Fire-Proof Safes and Vaults; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheets of drawings, forms a full, clear,
and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to doors for fire-proof safes and vaults, its object being to provide a shield or plate which will effectually protect the combination-lock and other looks from all drilling or punching from the outside, thereby rendering it impossible to open a fire-proof safe or vault in the easy manner in which they are now opened.
It consists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar combination of parts and details of construction, as hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings already mentioned, which serve to illustrate my said invention more fully, Figure l is a section of a safe-door, showing a metal plate attached to the inner surface of the door upon which a combination-look is adjusted, having a metal boX-c0vering. Fig. 2 is a similar part of a safe-door, showing a section of the metal plate with the combination-lock adjusted. Fig. 3 is an inside view of the combination-lock with boxcovering adjusted to the metal plate. Fig. 4 is an inside view of the metal plate without the combination-lock.
Similar letters refer to similar parts thro u ghoutthe several views.
A represents the knob and dial of a combination-lock.
B is the outside plate of metal of an ordinary fire-proof safe or vault.
O is a plate of metal constructed of alternate layers of welded steel and iron of any desirable thickness. This metallic plate O is welded or otherwise attached to the inner su rface B, and upon this plate the combination or other lock is adjusted. It may extend over the entire inside surface of the door or may just cover enough of the inside surface of the door to fully protect all parts of the combina tion or other look from drill, punch, or other tools operated from the outside of the safe.
D represents the various combinationwheels of a combination-lock constructed in the usual manner. These are attached to the metal plate 0 by means of a pin a, upon which they revolve. The pin a screws firmly into a threaded opening I) in the metal plate 0. The threaded opening 1) extends only partway through the plate C, as shown in Fig. 2.
E is a metal rod connecting the knob A with the cogwheel c, by means of which the knob A revolves the cog-wheel O, which in turn revolves the cog-wheels e and f, thus revolving the combination-wheels in the usual. manner. The cog wheel 6 revolves upon the pin g, which screws firmly into a screwthreaded opening 1 in the plate 0. These threaded openings 2' and I) extend only part way through the plate G, as shown in Fig. 2, the only opeuingextending through the plate 0 being It for the metal rod E, connecting the knob A with the cog-wheel c.
H is a metal box-covering, which fits closely over the combination-wheels D and cog-wheels c e f.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a fire-proof safe or vault, the combination, with the safe-door, of plate of welded steel and iron secured together and hard ened, as described, and provided with an opening for the passage of the spindle for the knob, and with internally-screw-threaded recesses for the reception of the studs for the combination-wheels, the spindle, the studs, the combination-wheels, and the casing, said plate being attached to the inner surface of the door and the casing removably affixed to the plate, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEO. J. H. GOEHLER.
