J. ROBERTS. ELECTRIC CIGAR LIGHTER.
No. 435,668. Patented Sept. 2, 1890;
pawns co., puma-mm msmmmm n c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ROBERTS, OF PI'ITSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF TIVO-THIRDS TO HOMER H. REDPATH AND IRVIN REDPATI'I, OF SAME PLACE.
ELECTRIC CIGAR-LIGHTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,668, dated September 2, 1890.
Application filed February 3, 1890. Serial No. 339,076. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ROBERTS, a citi: zen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Cigar-Lighters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled re in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in i 5 electrical cigar-lighters; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved lighter, which is constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the under side of the base, showing the electrical connections with the battery. 7
To put my invention into practice, I provide a circular base a, and form integral therewith a reservoir Z), having openings 0 extending a short distance above the top surface of the same. Into these openings 0 are secured 3o vertically-placed tubes (Z, into which the lighters e are placed. These lighters e consist in a handle f, of suitable insulating material, a metallic shank, and a brush g, formed of fine wire. A suitable figure r is attached to the 3 5 base a and insulated therefrom. This figure I prefer to be a bronze statue of a man having a drawn sword h, against the point of which the brush 9 when in contact will form an electric circuit.
In operation a wire 2' from the battery is connected to the figure r and the said figure insulated from the metallicbase. From a point 76 beneath the base a are three connected wires Z on a, one Z of which leads to the battery and the other two m H separately to the two lighters e, and when desired to light a cigar one of the lighterseis withdrawn from its tube (Z and the brush g moved across the point of the sword h, which completes the circuit, which commences from the battery, through the wire i, through the figure 0, through the sword h,into the lighter e, through its wire m or n to the connecting-wire Z, back to the battery. Vhen this circuit is completed and then broken, a spark is produced which ignites the inflammable substance in the brush.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described electricalcigar-lighter, consisting of a base having a reservoir 1) formed integral therewith, the vertical tubes (1, secured to the base, the lighters e, inserted in the tubes and having a handle of insulating material and a metallic brush g, a suitable figure erected on the base, but insulated therefrom, and having an electrical contact, as h, and an open circuit having one of its wires iconnected through the base to the figure, said circuit also including a source of electrical energy and having its wires Z, m, and a connected to the base at a common point k, said wires on n being connected, respectively, with the lighters c, all combined and arranged for the purpose described, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto affix my signature this 24th day of January, A. D. 1890.
