CAR GOUPLING.
Patented Aug. 26, 18901.
WMM/www vvueyvoz J. Mike?? UNITED STATESi 4 PATENT OFFICE..
IILLIAIWI .I. VALKER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO LOUIS HAMMERSCI-IMIDT, OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-COU PLI NG.
SPECIFICATIONformng part of Letters Patent No, 435,196, dated August 26, 1890. Application filed June 2,1890. Sen'al No. 353,928. '(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, WILLIAM J. WALKEm-'of the city of St Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Im- `p`rovements in Oar-Couplings, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has for its object to provide 1:0 a novel and simplified construction in that class of car-couplings commonly known as the Janney type; and it consists in the peculiar` combination and construction of devices hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims. l
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention with the combined hook and link in position to act as an ordinary link. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section 2o taken on line z/ y, Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section on line ma of Fig. 2.
The object of the improvement is to provide a combined hook-and-link coupling, which shall couple with all classes of couplers now 2 5 in common use, either the Janney type or `the link-and-pin, or any twin-jaw coupling, whereby all will be combined in a compact, si1nple,and effective form.
1 is the draw-bar of the usual configuration 3o peculiar to the Janney type of coupling, but having a rearward swell or internal recess 2, conforming to the circle described by the inwardly-projecting hook or lug 3, which is formed integral with the combined hook and link 4, which last named is pivoted to the draw-bar in the usual manner by means of the vertical pin 5. The combined hook and link, or knuckle Ll, is provided with the usual buffing-hook 6, also with the hook or lug 3,
4o which is engaged by the locking device, and also with vthe elongated tail 7, having an elongated slot 8, which is adapted to form a link and couple with the ordinary link-.and-
' pin coupling when swung around, as shown in Fig. 1. v
I 9 is the locking device for the combined hook and link, which in the present case is in the form of a vertically-moving lever or arm pivoted within the draw-bar inthe longitudinal passage 11 thereof by means of a 5o pin or bolt 10, and having a hook 12 at its forward end for engaging the tail end of the said combined hook and link when the latter is in a locked position and used as a twin coupling, and which also serves to engage the hook or lug 3 when the said combinedhook and link 4 is in an open position and used as a link-coupling- (See dotted lines in Fig. 2.)
13 represents a short chain connected to the hooklever 9 forward of its pivot-pin 10, 6o and passing upward through an opening 14 in the draw-bar and carried to a shaft 15 carried by the car, or the same arrangement of chain and shaft may be applied to said hooklever in rear of ,said pivotal pin; but in such case said shaft and chain will be located on the under side of the draw-bar, so as to depress or pull down upon the rear end of said hook-lever.
In case of accident breaking off the knuckle 7o or combined hook and link 4 and its mountings, or in case same becomes disabled, then I may insert the ordinary link in the drawhead so as to engage the hook 12, thus arranging the coupling again in working order as a link-coupling.
In operation when my coupling is to be used as a twin coupling, the combined hook and link et operates in the manner usual to the .Ia'nney type of couplings, which will be 8o understood without further description; but when same is to be used as alink-coupling the tail end 7 should be turned so asto project outwardly in line with the draw-bar, as shown in Fig. 1, until the hook or lug 3 comes 85 in contact with the hook 12, which limits its motion in that direction, and causes all draft to be exerted in a direct line with the center of the draw-bar, as in the case o f an ordinary link-coupling, all pressure being imposed 9o upon said hook 12 and removing a like amount from the pin 5, which is desirable. When twin couplings are brought together in coupling on curves, the hook 12 will enter the opening 8 in the coinbined hook and link 95 4, and then, as the cars are run off onto a straight track, said hook will assume its normal position, which is entirely overlying the link portion of the said hook, thus showing that the improved coupling may be operated on comparatively short curves in a road.
What I claim isl. The herein-described U-shaped combined hook and link, adapted to be pivoted,
to the draw-head and swung around and be used either as a hook or link, substantially as described.
2. The hereindescribed U-shaped combined hook and link, having one arm thereof slotted and adapted to be pivoted to the drawhead and swung around and be used either as a hook or link, substantially as described.
3. In a car-coupling, the combination, with a pivoted hook having a vertically-slotted tail-piece,- of a pivoted arm having a hook on the endthereof adapted to engage the for- Ward face of the tail-piece or the slot therein, whereby it may be coupled upon a curve, as described.
4C'. In a car-coupling, the combination, with a tail-piece having an elongated slot therein,
of a lug projecting therefrom, and a pivoted arm having a hook thereon adapted to engage the said lug, as described.
5. A car-coupling having a rotating hook pivoted to its draw-bar, said hook having an additional hook or lug 3, adapted for contact with a locking device, as 9 l2, located within said draw-bar, substantially as set forth.
6. The herein-described combined hook and link having bufng-surface 6, hook or lug 3, and tail 7, provided withv slot 8, substantially as set forth.
7. A horizontally-rotating hook 4, provided with hook or lug 3, in combination with a draw-bar, hook-lever 9 l2, and means for operating said hook-lever, substantially as set forth. v
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VILLIAM .I WALKER.
