UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUSTO BROCK, OF BUENOS AYRES, ARGENTINE REPUBLIC.
AIR-ENGINE."
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,422, dated August 19, 1890.
. Application filed February 3, 1890. Serial No. 338,997. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, AUGUsTO BROOK, a subject of the King of Prussia, Germany, residing at Buenos Ayres, Argentine Republic, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Engines, of which the folvlowing is aspecification. 1
This invention relates to certain improvements in air-pumps or exhausters and condensers; and the invention consists in eertain novel features of construction and in combinations of parts, more fully described hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in Y the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side View thereof. Fig. 2 is another side View at right angles to the former. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a modification.
Upon a suitably-supported horizontal shaft a is mounted at one end thereof a vane orfiy b, while the other end of the same shaft carries a crank cl, to which is connected a rod e. The rod 6 is jointed with the upper end of another rod f, the joint being guided by the links 9 g g. The links g g are attached to the frame, as shown. The lower end of the rod f is fixed to an india-rubber cap or hood h, having a somewhat semi-spherical shape, and secured at itslower part to a tapered closed vessel d, of sheet-steel or other suitable metal. At the lower end of this vessel is fixed, laterally, a casting 7c, furnished with a hole is, communicating with the inside of the vessel. The front or outside surface of this casting 7c is ground smooth or faced up, and against the same moves an oscillating plate m, which is pivoted to turn upon a pin or pivot m. The plate m is terminated by a bar m which is shaped to that of the vessel 2' and the semi-spherical cap or hood h when expanded. The bar at carries at its upper end a slotted bar or guide m Within this guide slides a block a, which is connected by means of an extension 0 of the crank d.
The sliding plate at is provided with two holes or ports and short tubes p p, which communicate alternately. with the opening 10 in the casting k, and the vessel 1', so that when the plate at is set oscillating to-and fro from the rotary motion of the cranks d ando by the action of the wind against the vane or fly b the hood h is alternately collapsed and expanded. When the hood is collapsing, the air contained in the vessel 1' is compressed and expelled through the port 70 and pipe 10', in order to be conveyed to a reservoir or the like, while when the same hood h is expanding air is again drawn in through the pipe 19 and the hole or port 70' into the vessel 11. The pipe 13 may be connected with a storage-reservoir for the compressed air by means of a suitable indi'a-rubber pipe or hose. The hood h is made of fairly strong india-rubber, so that when collapsed, as shown in Fig. 2, it has a tendency to return to its normal position by reason of the elasticity of the india-rubber. The air-pump may be simplified by substituting for the piece 70, with the sliding plate m, a chest or shell, with an exhaust and forcing valve or tap, as shown in Fig. 3. In the valve-chest r the expansion of the hood h causes air to be drawn in at r, and its collapse causes air to be expelled at 4*.
It is evident that various changes might be made in the form and arrangements of the parts described without departing from the scope and spirit of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise construction herein set forth.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of this invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. In combination, the air-tight receivingchamber having the flexible dome top, and
the casting in its lower portion forming a port, the vertical rod secured to said top, the driveshaft provided with a crank connected with said rod, and the swinging valve-plate secured to said casting having the upwardlyextending arm loosely connected to said crank to be rocked thereby, substantiallyas described.
2. The combination, with the receivingvessel havinga port and the collapsible fiexible hood or top, of the swinging plate having two ports adapted to alternately register with said port of the vessel and provided with the In testimony whereof I have signed my extended arm and guide, and the crank-shaft name to this specification 1n the presence 0t connected to intermittently collapse said two subscribing witnesses.
hood, the crank of said shaft having an ex- AUGUSTO BROOK. 5 tended end provided withaslidingbloek e011- Witnesses:
