Be it known that I, ROBERT KIRK, of Maplewood, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Routing-Machines, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my improved routing-machine. 1 Fig. 2 is a top or plan View of the same; Fig. 3, atop view of the verticallyinovable frame and sliding table or platform; Fig. 4, detached views of the same; and Fig. 5, an enlarged perspective View of the forward end of the router-frame, showing the crossshaft for elevating and depressing the table.
7 The object of my invention is to construct a cheap, simple, and easily-operated routingmachine; and it consists of a frame hinged at one end to a suitable support, the opposite end of which is capable of being moved ver-' tically a limited distance. On this frame is a table hinged at one end to a horizontallymovable lever, the free end of the table being adapted to slide on the vertically-movable frame. This table receives the block to be routed, and above the block is a stationary vertical rotatable bit, against which the block is directed by means of the frame and table, so that the requisite depth and area of the block may be submitted to the operation of the bit, as will now be set forth.
In the drawings, A represents the lower horizontal limb of a U-shaped frame, and B the upper limb parallel to limb A. These two limbs are cast together with their head 0, or they may be cast separately and afterward secured together. The space between these limbs A B is sufficient to permit of the movement of the frame] and table, to be hereinafter described. To the lower limb is attached at each end the legs D D, which are suitably braced by the cross-rods E. The forward end of the limb A has a cross-head F securely attached thereto, the ends of which head have forwardly-projecting right-angled extensions G G and are 'bored to receive a horizontal shaft H. At each end of this shaft is ashort crank or cam I, on which the vertically-movable table rests. The shaft H between the boxing also receives an adjustable lever J, the lower end of which has a stirrup K near the floor, so that when the foot of the operator is in the stirrup his heel can rest on the floor, and thus enable him to control the move ment of the lever J.
L represents a U-shaped frame, the side limbs of which near the are or forward end rest on the cams I, and the rear ends of the limbs are hinged to the head 0, as shown at M. It will be thus seen that the forward end of this frame is capable of being moved vertically a limited distance by means of the foot-lever J through the medium of the rockshaft H and cams I.
On the left side of the machine, near the rear end of the frame L, is hinged the rear end of the lever N, the forward end of which projects beyond the end of the machine. The
frame L is designed to receive a table O, one end of which is reduced, so as to form a handle P, while its opposite end has two or more upwardly-projecting pins Q. The lever N, which passes over this end of the table, has a series of holes B, into which holes the pins are designed to enter. As the table 0 is free to slide on the frame L and is controlled by the lever N and the handle P, the location of the table can be changed at will during the operation, as will be more fully shown hereinafter. The table 0 has a longitudinal slot S and two adjustable heads T T, one of them being provided with a horizontally-disposed screw U. Between these heads the block V to be routed is held.
At the rear end of the machine is an arm W, which carries a pulley to receive power from the line-shaft and a larger grooved pulley on the side of it to transmit motion to the grooved pulley X on the vertical shaft'Y on the forward end of the limb B. This vertical shaft Y carries in its lower end the routingbit Z. An idler-pulley a, located on the arm W near the pulley, serves to make the belt I) taut, and a lever c, hinged to the head O,having its forward end extending up to the front end of the machine, serves to shift the main driving-belt d. It will thus be seen that the bit is stationary or is rotated at one point, while the block to be routed is capable of being raised or lowered by means of the footlever L or shifted horizontally below the bit to any desired position by the table 0. By means of the pins Q and holes R the leverage can be adjusted so as to make the feed of the block positive and easily regulated by the operator.
lVhat I claim as new is- 1. In a routinganaehine, a vertically-movable frame having thereon a horizontallysliding table pivotally hinged to and combined with the swinging lever, substantially as herein set forth. 2. In a routing-maohine,a horizontally-slid- 111g table having thereon suitable adjusting studs or h ads and pivotally hinged at one end to a lever, in combination with a vertically-movable table, substantially as herein set forth.
3. A frame hinged at the rear end to a basesupport, the forward end of the support having a cross-head carrying a shaft provided with cams, and a foot-lever for elevating and depressing the frame, in combination with a stationary vertical rotatable bit, substantially as herein set forth.
4:. A frame hinged at one end so that its free end is capable of being elevated and de pressed, having a lever hinged to said frame near its pivotal end and capable of a horizon tal movement, said frame being provided with a free table hinged at one end to the lever, substantially as herein set forth.
