SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,359, dated August 12, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB R. SCOTT, of Nyack, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Loop and Sole Trimmer for Boots and Shoes, of which the-following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to leather-working machinery, and its object is to provide a new and improved trimming-machine which is simple and durable in construction, very effective in operation, and specially designed to out the loops of the fair stitching-thread under the channel-cover on the under side of the sole, so that the channel-cover can fold onto and be fastened to a smooth surface.
The invention consists of a cutter mounted to turn and provided with a flange and a spring-pressed table supporting the sole to present the latter to the cutter.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement with parts in section. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the cutter for cutting loops only. Fig. f is a front face view of the same. Fig. 5 is an enlarged plan view of a cutter for cutting loops and trimming the sole. Fig. 6 is a face view of the same. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the improvement with the cutters removed. Fig. 8 is a plan view of the sole to be operated on. Fig. 9 is a transverse section of the same on the line a: w of Fig. 8. Fig. 10 is a plan view of a sole trimmed and having the loops out, part of the channel-cover being folded over the trimmed surface. The improved trimming-machine is provided with a suitably constructed frame A, in the upper part of which is mounted to turn in suitable bearings a shaft B, carrying a pulley 0, connected bya belt with other machinrey for imparting a rotary motion to the said G, having its periphery curved, as is plainly shown in Fig. 1, so as to pass between the sole and the upper and present the channel on the underside of the sole to the cutter. The disk G is mounted to turn on the top of a longitudinally-extending plate H, provided with a longitudinal slot H, through which passes a bolt H screwing in a table I, so that the said plate can be adjusted longitudinally to move the disk Ginward or outward, according to the shapeof the boot or shoe under treatment. The table I, supporting the plate H and disk G, is provided with a downwardlyeXtending arm I, fitted to slide vertically in suitable guideways J, secured to the front end of the frame A.
The table I is connected at its under side with a downwardly-extending rod K, connected with a treadle under the control of the operator. The rod K has its bearing in a nut L, screwed in the bed-plate A of the main frame A, as is plainly shown in Fig. 1. A spring L is coiled on the rod K, and its lower end rests on the top of the said nut L, its upper end pressing against the under side of the table I. By-adjusting the nut L in the bedplate A the tension of the said spring L can be regulated.
Above the disk G, in the rear of the cutter D, is arranged a guide-roller N, mounted to turn on avertically-extending pin fasten ed in an arm 0, held longitudinally adjustable on the main frame A. The arm 0 is for this purpose provided with a longitudinal slot 0, through which passes a screw P, screwing in the frame A and permitting a longitudinal adjustment of the said arm 0. The upward movement of the table I is limited by a setscrew Q, adapted to abut against the under side of one of the bearings of the shaft B, so that when the machine is not in use the disk G is not forced in contact with the roller N.
The sole R to be operated on is provided on its under side near each edge with the usual channel R, formed by cutting part of the sole out, so as to make a cover R as is plainly shown in Figs. 8 to 12. A stitch S is made by the usual stitch-machine through the sole R along its edge, so as to imitate hand-sewed shoes or boots. The loops formed by this stitch S are in the channel R and have to be trimmed off in order to place the cover R back on the channel, so as to form a smooth surface on the under side of the sole.
Sometimes it is only'desired to trim off the loops of the thread S on the under side of the sole, and for this purpose a cutter D is used, such as is shown in Figs. 1, 3, and l. This cutter is provided with straight cutting-edges, and when used cuts off only the loops, so as to leave the channel R smooth.
'When it is desired to round off the outer end of the sole on the under side, at the same time cutting the loops, then the cutter D is .used, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, this cutter being curved at its cutting-edges, so as to trim the sole R, at the same time cutting off the loop, as illustrated in Figs. 11 and 12. The outer edge of the sole is thus rounded oif on the under side, as illustrated.
The operation is as follows: The machine is set in motion by rotating the shaft B. In order to place the sole in the proper position the operator presses on the treadle, so as to move the rod K downward, whereby the table I, with the plate II and disk G, is lowered. The operator can now conveniently place the sole R onto the top of the disk G, the periphery of which latter extends between the top of the sole and the upper, as is plainly shown in Fig. 1, it being understood that the sole is placed upside down on the disk G. The channel-cover 3* had previously been folded back over the sole, as is shown in Fig. 1, so that when the operator releases the pressure on the treadle the table I is forced upward and the disk G presents the channel R to the cutter D, the flange E resting against the inner end of the channel-cover R as is plainly shown in Fig. 1. The loops of the stitching S are now in line with the cutting-edges of the cutter D, so that when the operator feeds the sole forward the revolving cutter D cuts the loops off the inner channel R, the remainder of the stitching staying in the sole, but the channel R being smooth, so that the cover R can be folded back onto the channel and fastened thereto in the usual manner. When the cutter shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is used, the edge of the sole is also trimmed, at the same time cutting oif the loops, as is plainly shown in Figs. 10, 11, and 12. The plate II, with the guide-roller N, is always set in such a manner that the sole R is prevented from being moved too far inward, the edge of the sole resting against the guide-roller N, when the sole is fed forward under the cutter D over the disk G.
By adjusting the set-screw Q the distance between the cutting-edges of the cutter D and the top of the disk G can be regulated, ac-
cording to the thickness of the sole under treatment. The disk G is moved longitudinally, according to the width of the channel R, by adjusting the plate II by means of the set-screw I1 Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. In a loop-cutter and sole-trimmer, the combination, with'a rotary cutter provided with an annular flange, of a disk arranged below the said cutter and adapted to support the sole under treatment, a longitudinally: adjustable plate on which the said disk is mounted to turn, a spring-pressed sliding table carrying the said plate to present the sole to the cutter, and a rod connected with the said table to move the latter downward to place the sole in position on the said disk, substaniially as shown and described.
2. In a loop-cutter and sole-trimmer, the combination, with a rotary cutter provided with an annular flange, of a disk arranged below the said cutter and adapted to support the sole under treatment, a longitudinallyadj ustable plate on which the disk is mounted to turn, a spring-pressed sliding table carrying the said plate to present the sole to the cutter, a rod connected with the said table to move the latter down to place the solo in position on the said disk, and a guide-roller held above the said disk and adapted to engage the edge of the sole under treatment, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a loop-cutter and sole-trimmer, the combination, with a rotary cutter provided with an annular flange, of a disk arranged below the said cutter and adapted to support the sole under treatment, a longitudinallyadj usiable plate on which the said disk is mounted to turn, a spring-pressed sliding table carrying the said plate to present the sole to the cutter, a rod connected with the said table to move the latter down to place the sole in position on the said disk, a guideroller held above the said disk and adapted to engage the edge of the sole under treatment, and a longitudinally-adjustable arm carrying the said roller, substantially as shown and described.
4:. In a loop cutter and sole-trimmer for boots and shoes, the combination, with the cutting mechanism of a table mounted to slide vertically, of a plate fitted to slide longitudinally on the said table and a disk mounted to turn on the said plate and adapted to support the sole to be trimmed, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a loop-cutter and sole-trimmer for boots and shoes, the combination, with the cutting mechanism of a table mounted to slide vertically, of a plate fitted to slide longitudinally on the said table, a disk mounted to turn on the said plate and adapted to support the sole to be trimmed, and aspringpressingon the under side of the said table, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a loop-cutter and sole-trimmer for boots and shoes, the combination, with the cutting mechanism of a table mounted to slide Vertically, of a plate fitted to slide longitudinally on the said table, a disk mounted to turn on the said plate and adapted to support the sole to be trimmed, a spring pressing on the under side of the said table, and a setscrew held in the said table for limiting its upward movement, substantially as shown and described.
