Beit known that I, AUGUsTINE SYL'vEsrnR MCDERMOTT, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference-marked thereon,which form a part of this speciiication.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in cultivators, having for its object the production of a straddle-row cultivator, the parts of which can be adjusted and held close together or far apart.

C C are the cultivator-shovel standards, each of which is rigidly secured to a U- shaped bracket or clip D, having slotted arms d d, through which and holes in the drag-bars are passed bolts d', washers d2 being interposed between said arms and drag -bars. These washers are cylindrical, and provided on one face with intersecting grooves or recesses d3 d4, the latter being deeper than the former, whereby the standards on opposite sides of drag-bar can be set closer together or held farther apart, increasing or diminishing the distance between standards CV on each drag-bar. Teeth d5 are formed in one face of each Washer to engage similar teeth on arms d to prevent slipping.

Said frame is provided with a slot c2, through which projects a bolt e3 of lever E, a spring e4 and l disk e5 serving to hold a pin e6 of such lever in engagement with any one of a series of apertures e7 in such frame. To the outward forward end of lever E is pivoted a plate F, having hooks ff', to the fprmer of which is connected one end of a chatn f2, secured to one end of a coil-spring f3, ghe other end of the latter being secured to t hook f4 of lever E. These clamps g have each loops g2 for holding a cylindrical portion or arm g3 of a swivel g4. In these swivels are adjustably connected the ends of an arched bar g5, the same being held by bolts g, passed through This arch-bar serves to hold the drag-bars the desired distance apart. By means of lever E and its spring the drag-bar can be held at the desired tension and the latter is readily adjusted to a greater or less degree. By inserting a wooden pin in opening f5 of plate F the latter can be held rigid when spring-tension is not required.

I claim as my inventionl. In a cultivator, the combination, with 4o the drag-bars and the hanger-bars, of the coupling or hinge having a split sleeve encircling and secured to the forward end of each drag-bar, and an upwardly-extended collar secured to said sleeve and attached to the lower end of one of said hanger-bars, and a set-screw for holding the same, substantially as set forth.
2. In a cultivator, the combination, with the drag-bar and the hanger-bar, of the coup- 5o ling or hinge consisting of a split sleeve encircling and secured to the forward end of said drag-bar, an upper curved loop, a collar, and a set-screw for attachment to said hanger-bar, substantially as set forth.
3. In a cultivator, the combination, with the cylindrical drag-bars, of the shovel-standards having U-shaped brackets or clips secured to opposite sides of said drag-bars and adjustable laterally with relation to their par- 6o allel sides, Vsubstantially as set forth.

6. In a cultivator, the levers having the pivoted plates at their forward ends, the springs connected to said levers and to said plates, and the connection between the latter and the drag-bars, substantially as set forth.
7. In a cultivator, the combination, with the drag-bars, of the levers having each a pivoted plate at its forward end, the springs connected to said plate, and the chain-connections between said drag-bars and said plates, substantially as set forth.

In a c ultivator, the combination, with the tongue-bars, the slotted frame having holes or openings,and the drag-bars, of the levers having pins designed to enter said holes or openings, the spring-pressure holding said levers against said frame, the plates pivot-ed to said levers, the springs connected to said levers and plates, and the connections between the latter and said drag-bars, substantially as set forth.
9.-In a cultivator, the combination, with the drag-bars,.of the clamps having looped portions, the swivels having vertical portions secured in said looped portions and provided with holes or openings in their upper horizontal portions, the arched bar, and the bolts for adjustably securing the ends of said bar in said swivels, substantially as set forth.

In a cultivator, the combination, with the tongue-bars, of the forked supportingframe h, the seat adjustably secured onv the outer end thereof, the plates h', rigidly secured to the forward ends of the bars of said frame and having a series of holes and pivoted to the tongue-bars, and the bolts h2, for adjusting said plates with relation to said tongue-bars, substantially as set forth.
