Description

PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES E. ATWOOD, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVED WASHING-ROLLER.
Specitication forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,279, dated June 28, 1864.
To all whom it may concern,.- y
Be it known that I, J AMES E. A'rwoon, of Trenton, county of Mercer, and` State of New J ersey, have invented new and useful improvements in washing-rollers, to be called the hand washing rollers,7 and to be used with the common wash tub, with plain or luted washboard, or anyother wayto avoid hand-rubbing or injury to the hands; and I do hereby dcclare the following to Abe a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a Ipart of this specification, in which the gure l is a perspective view and shows the washer in working order.
Letter A is the handle; D D', the rollers; B B', end pieces for the support of the handle A and rollers D D. C is a protector to the hand and preventive ot' the clothes winding around the rollers D D.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe the construction and operation thereof.
For medium size I construct the handle A of wood and six inches in length and about one and one-halt` inch in diameter. The ends B B are of brass or other suitable metal that will not rust the clothes, and nearly like the letter A in form, and are fastened to the handle A with two screws at each end. The l rollers D D are made of common vulcanized rubber tubing drawn on over woodenrollers, which rollers should be from one-eighth to one fourth inch larger in diameter than the bore of the rubber tubing, thus requiring the rubber to be stretched on with force, taking care to cover the wooden roller first with some gumshellac varnish. The shield G is made of tin and extends the full length of the handle A and rollers D D, is ofhalf-mcon shape, and is soldered or otherwise securely fastened to the ends B B. The rollers D D are set in the lower ends of B B by a rod or screw eX- tending a proper distance into the wood and running loose in the brass end pieces.
The object ot my invention is to a'ord a means of washing rapidly and easily without injury to thefabric and without the least wearing, the skin from the hands.
Now, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The arrangement and combination of the handle A and the rollers D D with the end pieces, B B; also, the arrangement of the shield C, all substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
