Description
(No Model-A) N'l SCOOP.
No. 431,921. r Patented July 8, 1890.
, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES N. SHAV, OF PETOSKEY, MICHIGAN.
SCOOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,921, dated July 8, 1890. Application filed April 10, 1890. Serial No. 347,367. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES N. SHAW, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Petoskey, in the county of Emmet and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scoops; and Ido hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference bei nghad to the accompan yin gdrawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for removing butter, lard, or similar substances from the vessels in which they are packed for transportation, so that said substances can behandled iu a neat, convenient, and easy manner; and it consists in providing a cylindrical scoop with a plunger and operating-rod,which passes through the handle of said scoop, the said rod carrying at its upper end a knob and at its lower end a cutter, which operates over the face of the plunger, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is 'a perspective View of a scoop constructed in accordance with my invention,a part thereof being broken away to better show the internal construction. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the plunger and piston-rod removed from the scoop.
A refers to the body portion of the cylindrical scoop, to the upper end of which is attached the top wall, from which extends the hollow handle B, the upper end of which is hanged, as shown. Thronglr the handle B passes a piston-rod C, to which the plunger I) is attached, said plunger operating within the cylindrical portion of the scoop. The plunger and piston-rod C are centrally apertured, and through this aperture passes a rod E, to the upper end of which is connected in any suitable manner a knob F. The lower end of the rod E carries a narrow transverse plate or cutter G, which is adapted to move over the face of the plunger and be turned by the knob.
When it is desired to remove the contents of a vessel containing lard, butter, or other like substances, it is only necessary to force the scoop into the substance, and as this amount progresses the plunger will be raised in the scoop and the piston-rod C projected, and as said rod moves through the handle the amount of material within the scoop may be determined by its height or the marks placed on the piston-rod C as they pass above the end of the handle. To deliver the contents of the scoop, it is only necessary to press upon the knob to force the piston toward the lower end of the scoop, and when said piston is projected to its full extent the knob can be turned, which will move the cutter over the face of the piston and release the material therefrom. This device is extremely simple and can be manufactured at a low cost.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a cylindrical scoop having a'hollow handle, of aplunger and rod connected therewith, a cutter secured so as to move over the face of the plunger, and means for turning said cutter, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a cylindrical scoop having a hollow handle, of a plunger, a rod connected to said plunger, a bar passing through the plunger and rod, a blade attached to the rod to operate over the face of the plunger, and a knob for turning the rod and blade, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I alhx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES N. SHAW. Vitnesses:
D. C. PAGE, A. C.L1TCHE1ELD.
