Be it known that l, RICHARD HERBERT LA- PAGE, a subject ofthe Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Great George Street, iVestminster, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and usei'ul Improvements in Compound Locomotive- Engines, of which the following is a specilication.
In compound locomotive-engines as hitherto constructed there have been one highpressure and one low-pressure cylinder placed side by side inside or outside the frames and working on one axle. IVhen it is desired to increase the size of the cylinders, in order to obtain suliicient power to work heavy trainsas, for instance, when it is not desirable to increase the pressure in the boiler but still obtain the necessary cylinder capacity-the cylinders, arranged as described above, become too large in .diameter to go between the wheels and the frames, .and it they are placed outside the frames the crank-pins have to be made very long, and there is danger of the cylinders themselves fouling the loading-gage, exist-ing platforms, tunnels, and the like. According to the present invention, these defects are obviated by the use of two low-pressure cylinders, of whichv the combined capacity maybe equal to that of a single low-pressure cylinder. By this means the use of a large over-hanging low-pressure cylinder is obviated, and when the cylinders are placed between the frames longer crank-journals may be obtained. In one arrangement the two cylinders are placed one above the other, each having its own piston and rod, the two piston-rods being connected together by a cross-head, to which a single connecting-rod is journaled. This rod works onto a crank of the same d ri ving-axle as that on which the rod ot' the hi gli-p ressure cylinder also works. The two low-pressure cylinders are supplied from one steam-chest, the ports being so arranged as to deliver steam from the valve-chest to both cylinders at the same time, the exhaust also taking place in the usual way. Ii' desired, there may be more than one steamchest; but I prefer to work the low-pressure cylinders with one valve-gear. Valves for working both the low-lnessure cylinders and the high-pressure cylinder may be placed in any position, either above, below, or at the sides ot the cylinders. Vhen the low-pressure valve is placed either above or below the cylinders, the steam passes direct through one cylinder to the other byports which unite the two cylinders. It is obvious that the lowpressure cylinders may be placed in any convenient position to attain this object.
Referring to the accompanying two sheets of drawings, Figurelis a vertical central section through the two low-pressure cylinders of a compound locomotive arranged according to my invention, so much of the locomotive as is necessary to illustrate the application of my invention thereto being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the exhaust-passages of the high and low pressure cylinders and the smoke-box of the locomotive.
l is a high-pressure cylinder, and 2 2 are two low-pressure cylinders of an outside cylinder com poundlocomotive-en gine. The two low-pressure cylinders are in the example shown arranged one directly above the other and provided with one steam-chest 3 and with one distributing-valve 4, that is operated by a link-motion in the ordinary manner.
The upper of the two cylinders 2 `s l'ormcd with steam and exhaust ports and passages 5 and 6 of the ordinary i'orm, and communicates with the lower cylinder at each end by connecting ports or passages 7. By this construction the two low-pressu re cylinders,\vl1ich are or may be of equal diameter and length, both receive steam from the steam-chest at the same time, the exhaust from each also taking place simultaneously.
S is the steam-pipe tor conveying highpressure steam to the high-pressure cylinder l, and 9 isa connecting-pipe for conveying exhaust-steam from this cylinder to the lowpressure cylinders 2. This connecting-pipe may be fitted with a valve-case l0, containing combined intercepting and starting valves constructed to operate in an automatic manner. The pistons oil the two low-pressure cylinders are connected by their rods ll to one slide-block or cross-head l2, that is guided in IOO the ordinary manner and coupled to one end of a connecting-rod13, the other end of which is coupled to the crank-pin 14 of the drivingshaft in the usual manner.

Vhat I claim is- 1. In a compound locomotive, the combination of a single high-pressure cylinder and two connected low-pressure cylinders, to both of which steam is admitted simultaneously, and from both of which it is exhausted sim ultaneously. I 1
2. In a compound locomotive, the combination, with a single high-pressure cylinder, of two connected low-pressure cylinders having a common steam-chest and a connecting-pipe between said high-pressure cylinder and said steam-chest, substantially as herein described.
3. In a compound locomotive, the combination, with a l1igl1-pressure cylinder, of two connected low-pressure cylinders having their piston-rods coupled to one connecting-rod, substantially as described.
4. In acompound locomotive, the combination,with a high-pressure cylinder, of two conneet-ed low-pressure cylinders having their piston-rods coupled to one slide-block and a con necting-pi pe to convey exhaust-steam from said high to said low pressure cylinders, substantially as described.
5. In a compound locomotive, the combination of a high-pressure cylinder, two connected low-pressure cylinders, a single distributing-valve for said low-pressure cylinders, and a connecting-pipe between said high and said low pressure cylinders, substantially as described.
6. In a compound locomotive, two low-presssure cylinders connected together at each end by ports or passages, the steam passing through one cylinder to and from the other, substantially as described.
7. In a compound locomotive, two low-pressure cylinders having their piston-rods coupled to one connecting-rod aud both cylinders receivng steam from one valve-chest, substantially as described.
8. In a compound locomotive, two low-pressure cylinders having their piston-rods coupled to one connecting-rod and both cylinders receiving steam from the same distributingvalve, substantially as described.
9. In a compound locomotive, two low-pressure cylinders having their piston-rods coupled to one connecting-rod, both cylinders being connected together at each end by ports and passages, substantially as described.
10. In a compound locomotive, two lowpressure cylinders having their piston-rods coupled to one slide-block, both cylinders receiving steam from one steam-chest, substantially as described.
1l. In a compound locomotive, two lowpressure cylinders having their piston-rods coupled to one slide-block, both cylinders receiving steam from the same distributingvalve, substantially as described.
12. In a compound locomotive, two lowpressure cylinders having their piston-rods coupled to one slide-block, the cylinders being connected together at each end by ports or passages, substantially as described.
13. In a compound locomotive, the combination of a single high-pressure cylinder with two low-pressure cylinders situated the one above the other and both driving onto one crank-pin, substantially as described.
14. In acompound locomotive, the combination of two low-pressure cylinders 2, pistonrods 11, slide-block 12, distributing-valve 4, and ports or passages 7, substantially as described.
