Description

8- DE MACKIEWIEZ.
Match Safe.
No. 43.186. Patented Juhe'21. 18764.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SEIDEL DE' MAOKIEWIOZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN MATCH-SAFES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,186, dated June 21, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, SEIDEL DE MACKIE- WIoz, of the city, count'y,'and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ignition-Surface for Matches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, said drawing representing a side e'evation of my improvement.
This invention pertains to match boxes, cases, or devices of any kind that are used to carry or contain friction-matches.
The object of the improvement is to provide an ignition or roughed surface ofadurable character, upon which surface the matches may be rubbed in order to produce combustl m.
The drawing represents an ordinary open match-holder, consisting of a back plate, A, of tin, with a hole, a, by which itis hung upon a wall-nail. Projecting from the face of the prats A in semicircular form is a tin box, B, which holds the matches, (shown in red The parts A B are united in the common manner, and, as here shown, they form one of the ordinary matchliolders in general use.
Upon the outside of the device thus made it is customary to paste or glue a small piece of sand-paper, so asto form a friction-surface on which to rub and thus ignite the matches; or, in lieu of sand-paper, sometimes the surface of the box is covered with glue and the sand dusted thereom Another plan is to prick the surface of the tin or metal composing the match holder so as to form small projections or roughened points upon the holder, against which the match is rubbed. But all of these plans are more or less objectionable. The sand or sandpaper soon wears off by the friction of the matches, and so do the roughened points just mentioned.
My improvement consists in the employment of a roughened or ignition surface composed of wire-gauze of any desired kind of metal.
In the present example of my improvement I cover the front of the box B with a sheet of wiregauze, O, as shown. The surface thus formed will always be sufficiently rough to ignite matches, and the cheapness of its application and durability render ita' very useful and desirable improvement.
In the application or use of my invention I do not limit myself to any particular form or kind of-match-holder, nor to the placing of my improved roughened surface upon any particular part thereof. It may be applied either to the match boX itself or used separately therefrom.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The employment of an ignition or roughened surface for matches, composed of wiregauze, made substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
