RAILWAY-CAR TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,544, dated July 8, 1890.
Application filed May 16, 1889- Serial No. 311,048. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID L. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have in vented a new and usefullmprovement in Railway Passenger-Car Trucks, (Case (3,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to railway passengercar trucks; and it consists in the several combinations of parts hereinafter described, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan View of a truck embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 represents a cross-section of Figs. 1 and 2. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 represent enlarged views of parts connected with swing-bolster, Fig. 4 being a plan view, Fig. 5 a cross-section, and Fig. 6 a longitudinal section.
Referring to the drawings, the numerals 1 and 2 represent, respectively, the wheels and axles of the truck. The journal-box springs 13, which bear on the side frames 3, are suspended by links from the journal-boxes, as shown in Fig. 2.
The numerals 4 and 5 represent, respectively, the transoms and end pieces of the truck. 'The swing-bolster 9 is suspended by swing-links 12 from springs 8, which have their seats in the transoms 4 and in a central spring-seat 14, secured to said transoms. The transverse equalizers 6 are supported on swing-bolsters 9, both centrally and at the ends, being also centrally guided by said bolsters, as shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6. To re duce friction, I use as a support the center bearing-balls 15 and the side bearing-balls 16. The transverse equalizers are united at their ends by the end equalizers 7, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The draw-bar 10, provided with coupler 11, is connected by hinges 17 to the transverse equalizer 6 to allow free motion to draw-bar, the said draw-bar, it will be seen, lying in the same horizontal plane as the said equalizer.
The car-body is supported on the end equale izers 7. (See Fig. 3.) This constructionpf truck allows the employment of passenger cars in which the center of gravity is located as low as possible, permitting the floor of the car to be arranged just above the truck-axles, thus economizing vertical space, a matter of great value for underground railway-lines.
I lay no claim in this application to the specific construction of car-truck described and claimed in my application, Serial No. 311,047, (Case 13,) filed May 16, 1889, nor to the matter described and claimed in my application, Serial No. 304,033, filed March 20, 1889.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
1. In a passenger-car truck, the combination, with the truck-frame, of a swing-bolster elastically connected to the same, and a transverse equalizer supported by said swing-bolster, substantially as described.
2. In a passenger-car truck, the combination, with the truck-framemf a swing-bolster elastically connected to the same and provided with central and side ball-bearings, and a transverse equalizer supported by said swing-bolster, substantially as described.
3. In a passenger-oar truck, the combination, with the truck-frame, of springs arranged to have abearing thereon, swing-links connected at their upper ends to said springs, a swing-bolster suspended by said links and provided with ball-bearings, and a transverse equalizer supported on said swing-bolster, substantially as described.
4. In a passenger-car truck, the combination, with the truck-frame, of a swing-bolster arranged between the axles of the truck and below their level, of a transverse equalizer supported on said swing-bolster and centrally guided thereby, substantially as described.
5. In a passenger-car truck, the combination, with the truck-frame, of a swing-bolster elastically connected to the same, a transverse equalizersupported thereon, and a drawbar connected to said equalizer, substantially as described.
6.
