OLIVER JOHNSON, OF KINGSTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO- THIRDS TO IVILLIAM P. SOMERS AND MAT. SLOAN, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
STAY-BOLT CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,571, dated June 3, 1890.
Application filed January 30, 1890. $erial No. 338,635. (No model.)
Be it known that I, OLIVER JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kingston, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Outters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side view. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, and Fig. 4 is a detail showing the knife.
This invention has relation tov cutters for stay bolts and rods; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the body of the device, which consists of a solid steel block, in one end of which is formed, centrally and longitudinally, a vertical passage A, open at either end to receive the slide knife or cutter B, and the cam-lever G, which is pivoted to the side walls, as shown. At top and bottom the side walls of the body-block A are joined by bridgeconnections integral therewith.
The upper bridge D separates the cutting end from the lever end. The lover or power end of the block A is slotted vertically to receive the cam end of the lever O, which is eccentrically pivoted therein by' the bolt a. The passage in which the cutter operates is provided with vertical shoulders I) in rear to limit the back movement of said cutter. At the cutting end the block A is vertically recessed in bifurcated form, as shown at c, for the purpose of guiding the rod or bolt to the cutter, an opening d being provided through the bottom of the recess to permit the passage of the rod or bolt. The lateral walls of the body A are slotted horizontally at diametrically-opposite points, as at c, said slots communicating wit-h the passage in which the cutter operates.
The cutter B is perforated transversely about its center to receive a rod or bolt f, the ends of which project laterally into the slots 6, and to each projecting end is secured a coiled spring g, which extends back within the slot or seat e, and is secured at its rear end to a pin or screw it. The forward end of the cutter is beveled from above downward and outward toward the cutting recess, and the bevel gradually becomes concave from side to side to the lower or cutting edge. edge of the cutter-is concave from above down- The rear ward to correspond with the curvature of the cam end of the lever O, in order that when the latter is drawn backward and downward said cutter will be projected forward without loss of motion to operate upon the bolt or rod within the recess 0, the springs at the side of the cutter serving to return the latter to its normal position when the cam-lever is reversed.
The cutter Bis constructed of steel, and the cutting end is beveled from above downward and is concave laterally, this concavity being greater at its lower portion. The cutting-edge is in the form of the arc of a circle, and the lateral concavity diminishes from said cutting-edge to the top of the cut-terblock. The vertical concavity is greater on the sides than in the middle of the cutterface.
The sides of the body are recessed at m above the lateral slots to receive the bent ends of an elastic V-shaped handle or bail E, said handle being secured by springing its ends within the recesses.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a stay-bolt cutter, the combination,
with the body-block constructed of one piece, having the central longitudinal knife-passage, vertically recessed at one end, provided with openings therein to receive the .bolt, and the vertical slot in the other end of said block, the cam-handle pivoted therein, in combination with the knife or cutter having a beveled concave front, and the lateral slots of the block and the retracting-springs and the rod f, having its ends arranged in the longitudinal slots, substantially as shown and de- 5 scribed.
2. A stay-bolt cutter constructed of a knife and a single piece of metal having a central knife-passage therein, the mortised rear end laterally perforated to receive the pivot-bolt,
10 the cam-handle pivoted thereon to actuate the knife, the vertical recess in the other end having a perforation to receive the bolt to he cut, the retracting-springs, and lateral slots to receive the ends of the transverse rod passing through the knife, and to form seats for the retracting-spring actuating the said knife, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OLIVER JOHNSON.
