HOISTING-GEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,308, dated June 3, 1890.

To au whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that L'GEoRGE FLETCHER, a citizen of the United States, residin g at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting-Gears, of which the following is a specification.
The various hand hoisting-gears now in use, both of the differential and worin-gear forms, are necessarily slow of operation in order to -obtain the required power; butit is very often desirable to have a faster motion for the purpose ofv quickly overhauling the tackle or to drop the weight being lifted rapidly into a re- The object of my invention of a mechanism which can be attached to any of the usual forms of hoisting-gears.
The accompanying drawing` shows an elevation of a common form of "hoisting-gear with my improved mechanism in section attached.
The main driving-shaft ct, which is operated by the power hoisting-wheel A, is eX- tended through the opposite side of the frame b and carries a pinion e. A stud s is Xed in the framing b, and upon it is mounted a large gear-wheel WV, which meshes with the pinion e. On the periphery of the large wheel IV is formed a groove Q2 to receive the chain or rope by which it is operated.
In the drawing I have shown the wheel WV in the form of an interior gear; but it is evident that a gear-wheel of the ordinary form, with the teeth on the outer edge, maybe used where desired. y
For hoisting heavy weights the gear is operated, as usual, by the chain C and wheel A; but when it is desired to overhaul the chain X rapidly, either for adjustment or for the purpose ot' quickly lowering the weight that has been hoisted, the gear is operated by the wheel WV by means of a chain or rope working in its groove n. What I claim, and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent, is-
In a hoisting-gearing, the combination of a small pinion fixed upon the main drivingshaft with a large gear-wheel having a groove in its periphery and mounted on a stud iiXed in the frame of the apparatus and meshing with said pinion, said gear being operated by an endless chain or rope working in said groove in its periphery, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
