- GARDEN PLOW.
No. 429,219. Patented June 3, 1890.
Hdflgcsses I lg egflr film. 0.11030 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM CAPERS MOTYEIRE, OF HATOHECHUBBEE, ALABAMA.
GARDEN-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,219, dated June 3, 1890.
Application filed July 16, 1889- Serial No. 317,692- (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM CAPERS MC- TYEIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hatchechubbee, in the county of Bussell and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Garden-Plow, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in garden-plows; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of the rolling colter and fender.
The beam A is constructed of a metallic bar having its rear end bent downward to form the standard B, to' which the plowshare or shovel O is secured. The forward portion of the beam is bent to one side, as shown at D, so as to pass around the driving-wheel E, which is journaled in the said forward portion and a keeper-bar F secured thereto, as clearly shown. The handles Gare of the usual construction and are secured to the beam in any desired manner. To one side of the standard I secure the rolling 'colter or fender II, which consists of a disk I, having a sharpened edge and journaled in the lower end of a bracket J, which is pivoted to the side of a standard and provided near its upper end with a transverse slot K,which is engaged by a bolt L on the side of the beam.
In practice the plow is pushed over the ground and the plowshare enters into and breaks up the earth in the usual manner. The disk I also enters the earth and cuts the same, so as to form a clean sharp furrow, and also serves as a fender to prevent the dirt being thrown over onto young plant-s, so as to kill the same. This disk furthermore cuts off the lateral roots of the plants, and thereby keeps the rows in proper condition. The draft of the device is materially lessened by the use of the carrying-wheel E, and the device can be pushed up close against the fence. In heavy ground it may be necessary to employ addi tional power to propel the machine, and for this purpose a team can be hitched to the front end of the beam.
It will be observed that the rolling disk, which serves the double purpose of a fender and a colter, can be adjusted to run to any desired depth and at any desired angle by loosening the securing-bolt, then turning the bracket to the proper point and tightening the securing-bolt.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a beam having the plow-carrying standard, of a supplementary standard pivoted to said plow-carrying standard, and a circular cutting-disk journaled to the lower end of said supplement-ary standard, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the beam having the plow-carryin g standard, asupplemental stand ard having a slot at its upper end, a circular cutter journaled to the lower end of the supplemental standard, a transverse bolt connecting the plow-carrying standard and the supplemental standard pivotally, and an adj listing-bolt, substantially as set forth.
3. The improved plow herein described and shown, consisting of a beam havingits rear end turned down to form a standard and having its front portion bent to one side, the keeper-bar secured to the beam, the carryingwheel journaled in the keeper-bar and the bent portion of the beam, the bracket pivoted to the side of the standard and provided with a transverse slot at its upper end, the bolt passing through the said slot into the beam, and the rotary cutting-disk jonrnaled on the lower end of the bracket, as set fortln In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aifixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM CAPERS MCTYEIRE.
Witnesses: I
