UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
CHARLES O. W'ILDER, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
FUEL-on. BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,205, dated June 3, 1890.
i Application filed March 10, 1890. Serial No. 343,257. (No model.)
T0 a/ZZ whom it may concern:v
Be it known that I, CHARLES O. VILDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fuel-Oil Burners, of which the following is a specification. Y
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of fuel-oil burners in which the oil in a iinely-divided state is atomized by means of an air-blast.
The object of my improvement is to provide in such a burnera simple and durable means for finely dividing the oil, so as to distribute it evenly throughout the air-current, and thereby thoroughly charge the air-current with atomized oil.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of the burner. Fig. 2 representsa transverse section at a.. Fig. 3 is a transverse section at Z).
A is an air-chamber formed ot an ordinary T-coupling.
B is the air-pipe, through which a strong current of air is driven, by means of a fan or other suitable means, into chamber A.
C is a section of pipe which is screwed into one end of chamber A, and forms the jet or burner proper. The opposite end of chamber A is closed by a cap D, in the center ot which is mounted a small pipe E, which extends centrally and longitudinally through the chamber, and is connected at its outer end with a source of oil-supply.
F is a spiral wire brush formed by introducing between twisted wires 7L 7i a continuous series of straight radial wires t' Il in the manner well known in making wire brushes. A portion of the twisted wires 7L 7L is left at one end without the radial wires t, and this portion is inserted in the inner open end of the oil-pipe, and is secured therein in such a manner as to only partially close the pipe. This is preferably done by inserting the wires h h in the pipe along one side thereof, and
then crimping the pipe longitudinally, so as to embrace and hold the wires and also leave at the opposite side ot the pipe the inclosed portionj. The radial wires t' extend diamet` rically across the interior of pipe O and form a spiral line along nearly its entire length.
L is a sliding damper arranged to control the flow of air through pipe B.
ln operation air is supplied in a strong current through pipe B, and passes through chamber A and pipe O. Oil is supplied t-hrough pipe E, and the oil passing through openingj flows along the wires 7L and the radial wires z', thus exposing a large amount of oil-covered surface to the action of the aircurrent, which is thereby quickly and evenly charged with the oil-vapor, which is ignited at the Inouth ot pipe O.
I claim as my inventionl. An oil-burner comprising a chamber having an air-inlet pipe, a burner proper consisting of a pipe connected at one end with said chamber, an oil-pipe passing through said chamber, an oil-distributer secured in the inner end ot the oil-pipe and extending along the interior of the burner-pipe, said distributer consisting of two or more wires twisted together to form a central core, and a series of radial wires embraced by said twistsd Wires and arranged spirally thereon, all combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. ln an oil-burner, the combination of the air-chamber, th e burner-pipe extending therefrom, the oil-pipe extending through the airehamber, and the oildistributer consisting of a central core secured within the open end of the oil-pipe, so as to partially close it, said core extending along the interior of the burner and provided with a series of radial wires spirally arranged thereon, substantially as set forth.
CHARLES o. WIEDER.
