CLOTHES-WRINGER.
SJEECIIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,178, dated June 3, 1890. Application filed Tune 1l, 1889. Serial No. 313,935. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN A. RUSSELL, a citizen of the UnitedV States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes- I/Vringers, of which the following is a specification. Y
This invention relates to improvements in that class of wringers which are attached to and detached from a wash-tub by the swinging of the table thereof from a horizontal operative position to a vertical inoperative position, and vice versa, which action Isimultaneously operates to throw the lower pressureroller of the Wringer into and out of engagement with the upper pressure-roller.
One object of this invention is to dispense with the employment of certain parts heretofore employed in such wringers, and thereby simplify the construction and materially reduce the cost of manufacture.
Another object is to utilize the pivoted table of the machine for directly actuating the gripping-jaw and for indirectly and simultaneously actuating the pressure-roller through the medium of said jaw when swung to either its operative or inoperative positions.
These objects are attained by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a front elevation Yof a clothes -wringer embodying my invention, broken away so as t0 show one-half in central section; Fig. 2, a plan view thereof; Fig. 3, an end elevation of the table, showing the trunnion and cam thereon for operating the clamping-jaw; Fig. 4, an end elevation of the wringer; Fig. 5, a similar view showing the front plate broken away; and Fig. 6, a vertical section on the line 6 6 of Fig. l, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A indicates the upper and B the lower pressure-rollers of my machine, the former of which is journaled at its ends in suitable` vertically-sliding boxes C, guided and working in standards D and held down to its work by powerful coiled springs E, confined between said boxes and the end of a springbar F, extending between the standards in a line with the rollers, the tension of which is regulated by means of a thumb-screw G, working Vthrough a bridge II. supported at its ends upon the standards, which screw bears upon so as to depress the spring-bar and cause a corresponding pressure upon the journal-boxes of the upper roller. The lower ends of each. of these standards terminate in a rigid j aw I, tiesigned to rest upon the outside of the tub, opposing each of which is an adjustable gripping jaw or clamp J, provided with a journal box or bearing K on an extension thereof, in which is j ournaled the lower pressure-roller B, the said clamping-jaw being adapted and arranged to have simultaneously both-a vertical and horizontal movement, the former of which operates to throwthelowerpressure-rollercarried thereby into and out of engagement with the upper pressure-roller, and the latter of which Vmovements causes the jaw to clamp or bind upon the inner face of the tub. These actions are accomplished simultaneously with the elevation or lowering of the pivoted table L by means of cams M, projecting laterally or radially from the trunnions N at each end of said t-able and arranged to have a bearing in the upper portion or shank of the iiXed jaw I of the standards, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. within corresponding recesses or cam-sockets O, formed in the shank or body of the adjustable jaw J, which latter is also provided with a suitable notch P on the forward side thereof, fitting over a stationary pin Q, projecting from the inner face of the shank of the fixed or stationary jaw I, by means of which latter the jaw will be guided in its movements. Thus it will be seen that when the table is swung down to the horizontal position shown in the drawings the adjustable jaw will first be moved horizontally until it impinges against the inner surface of the tub, after which, upon the further movement of the table and before completing the downstroke of the table, the pressure-roller B will be thrown up into engagement with and press firmly against the upper pressure-roller of the machine, so as to elevate'gthe same, compressing the springs E sufficiently to exert the These cams work IOO proper pressure on the 'clothes when passing between the rollers. A movement of the table in the reverse direotion-that is, swinging it to a Vertical position upon its pivotingtrunnions N-will produce a reverse opera tion of the parts-that is to say, it will cause the clamping-jaw to release the edge ot the tub and the lower pressure-rollerto fall down out of engagement with the upper pressure roller-at which time the machine is inoperative and ready to be removed from the tub for storage. The driving-gears R S ot the rollers are preferably located at each end thereof within or between 4the bearings or standards D, which are provided with wings T Cast thereon, but projecting inwardly toward each other, so as to cover the said gears.
Between the wings and straddling the j ournals of the rollers are arranged filling-plates U, located between the rollers proper and gears R S on the journals thereof, which plates effectually prevent the goods from werking in between the gears, so as to clog the machine during the wringilig operation.
In a machine constructed in accordance with the object ot my invention the operation of the clamping-jaw, as well as of the squeeze-rollers, is operative and uniform because of the lixed pivoting of the table operating the saine, the extreme movement of the table, as represented in Figs. l and showing the action of the parts to be the saine at all times, provided the tubs to which they are applied have staves of corresponding thickw ness; but in the event of a difference in thickness of the staves the pressure maybe easily regulated by the thumb-screw G, so that the pressure will be the saine under all eircumst-ances, and when the pressure is adjusted the attachment of the machine to the t-ub by the depression of the table to its horizontal operative position will at all times produce exactly the same pressure of the squeezerollers.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. In a clothes-\\'ringer, the combination, with the standards, the depending fixed jaws thereof, and the upper pressure-roller journaled in said standards, of the adjustable clamping-jaws' provided with a cam-recess in the shank or body thereof, guide-pins therefor, a table pivoted in said standards, cams on said table engaging and operating said adjustable jaws, and the lower pressure-roller journaled in said jaws, substantially as described.
In a clothes-wringer, the combination, with the standards provided with inwardlyprojecting wings, sliding boxes working in said standards, the upper pressure-roller journaled in said boxes, an adjustable spring,- bar extending between said standards, coiled springs confined between the ends of said bar and the sliding boxes, and depending fixed jaws on said standards, of the adjustable clamping-jaws provided with recesses in the shanks thereof, a table having trunnions journaled in the standards, cams on said trunnions engaging and working in said recesses in. the clamping-jaws, the lower pressure-roller journaled insaid jaws, guide-pins on the fixed jaws engaging corresponding notches in the clamping-jaws, and gears on each end of the pressure-rollers within the standards lying between the wings thereof, substantially as described.
