COMBINATION CLUTCH-COUPLING FOR PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,126, dated T une 3, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOHN B. GENIN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of St. Albans, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Clutch-Couplings for Pipes, of which the followingv is a full, clear, and exact description.
This improved coupling is composed of two tubular sections to be butted end to end, and each suitably adapted for attachment to a section of the pipe to be coupled together, two tongue projections, one mounted on or oarried by each coupling-section and both shaped to lap over the joints of the coupling-sections and to extend lengthwise of and to surround the coupling-section butted against the section which carries it, and each having in one edge of its overlapping portion a lateral notch, in combination with radial studs or pins, one on each coupling-section, and each in position when the coupling-sections lare butted to engage the notch of a tongue projection, and
springs, one on each coupling-section and arranged to press laterally on the edge of a tongue projection carried by the opposite coupling-section, and thereby to engage the notch of said tongue projection with its pin of the opposite couplingsection, and to hold them against accidental disengagement, all substantially as hereinafter described.
In the drawings forming part ot' this specication, Figure l is a side view of the coupling in two sections and the sections butted end to end and a central longitudinal section of the end of one of the sections showing its attachment by loose ring and screw-nut io a hose or pipe. In the drawings, A and B are the two similar tubular sections of the coupling of this invention butted end to end, O representing the line of joint.
A2 and B2 are two tongue projections, one A2 mounted on or carried by the couplingsection A and the other B2 mounted on or carried by the coupling-section B. Each tongue projection A2 B2 of the coupling-sections A B laps over the joint C between them, and extends over and partially surrounds the coupling-section adjoining that which carries it, and the edges a and b of the tongue proj ections A2 B2, respectively, and at their overlapping portions, as stated,have each a lateral notch A2 B5, respectively, for engagement 6o therewith of a radial stud or pin A4 B4 re spectively of the coupling-sections A B.
A5 B5 are bent springs, one held on each coupling-section A B, respectively, and each arranged to press laterally on the edge a2 or 65 b2 of the tongue projection A2 or B2 of the opposite coupling-section, and the edges a2 b2 are in each instance on an edge of the tongue projection opposite to its notched edge a b. On placing the coupling-sections together end 7o to end the tongue projections A2 B2, passing over the sections, are finally, with the ends ot the sections, butted in engagement by their notches A5 B3 with their respective .pins A4 B4 of the sections, being brought thereto by 75 the action of the bent springs A5 B5, which continue to hold them engaged against accidental disengagement, while allowing them to disengage on sufiicient force being applied to draw the couplingseetions apart. The coup- 8o ling-sections A andB have also each a tongue proj eetion D2 E2, respectively lying when the sections are united between the edges of the tongue projections A2 B2, that are not in engagement, and serving in conjunction with the latter projections as guides inl placing together and drawing apart the coupling-sections. The tongue projections described may be integral with their respective couplingsections or separate from them and suitably 9o attached. Again, the springs A5 B5 may be rigidly attached to their respective couplingsections; but it is preferable to confine each between opposed fixed bearings f f2 with a setscrew g, as they then can be adjusted in their spring action.
The coupling-sections at their ends opposite to their butted ends, as described, have each a male screw-thread F and a conical end or nipple Gr. H H are screw-nuts screwing on roo the screwthreaded ends F of the couplingsections, and each contains a loose ring J, which is engaged by its internal annular shoulder or flange K, and surrounds a hose or pipe L, otherwise entered upon the conical end of the coupling-section and into the screwnut, and byscrewing the latter onto the coupling-section the hose or pipe is fastened to it, all as is obvious Without further explanation. The loose ring J makes the bearing for the screw-nut on the hose or pipe, and thus twisting of the hose or pipe from turning the nut is obviated.
This invention is more particularly designed for coupling the pipes of railway-carsV employing the air system for braking the cars or a system for heating cars by steam 'from the locomotive-boiler or other generator of the train; but it is not to be limited in any regard thereto.
Having thus described niyinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
l. A coupling in sections A B, butted end to end, and each having tongue projections A2 B2 lapping over the joint (J of and fitting the sections and having lateral notches A3 La, in combination with radial pins A4 B and springs A5 B5 of the coupling-sections, the
former to engage the notches of the tongue projections and the latter to press laterally on the tongue projections to secure said engagement, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. A coupling in sections A B, butted end to end, and each having tongue projections A2 B21)2 E2 lapping over the joint C of and fitting the sections, and the tongue projections A2 B2 having lateral notches A3 B3, in combination with radial pins A4 B4 and springs A5 B5 of the coupling-sections, the former to engage the notches of the tongue projections and the latter to press laterally on the tongue projections to secure said engagement7 substantiallyas described7 for the purpose specified.
