Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
GEORGE O. COWVLES, OF EAST SAGINAIV, MICHIGAN.
PULLEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,116, dated June 3, 1890.
Application fil d September 11, 1889. Serial No. 323,593. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGEC. OOWLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Saginaw, county of Saginaw, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pulleys; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention is designed. as an improvement on a pulley for which an application for Letters Patent was filed by me June 28, 1889, Serial No. 315,858. In this device there was a narrow opening in the pulley from the center out through the rim. In this opening were placed two removable sections-a removable hub-section held in place by bolts attached to the web of the pulley and a removable web and rim section held in place by a bolt connecting it with the hub-section. My present invention relates solely to a novel means of holding the removable web and rim section in place independent of the hub-section.
' In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my pulley. Fig. 2 is a view of one of the locking-blocks. Fig. 3 is a view of the removable web and rim section.
In carrying out my invention,A represents the main portion of the pulley, A the shaft, A flanges on the web adjacent to the shaft, and A the bushing.
Bis the removable hub-section, held in place by the bolts 1), which extend to and are engaged with the main portion of the web.
0 is the removable websection, and preferably formed integral therewith is the re movt ble rim-section C. The removable web has on its edges 0 a tenon 0, adapted to enter a corresponding groove on the main portion of the web. The edges of the removable web are also provided with notches c and the edges of the main portion of the web a are provided with notches which when the re movable section 0 O is in place will register with those on the removable section. Into the orifices thus formed are placed the blocks removable section being withdrawn.
D, which key the removable section firmly in place. The vtongue-and-groove engagement between the removable section and the main portion prevents any lateral movement on the part of the removable section, while the insertion of the keys or blocks D prevent the It will be seen that when the blocks D are taken out the removable section 0 C can be withdrawn, and then by removing the hub-section B an opening is left from the center out through the periphery or rim, whereby the pulley can be placed on or removed from the shaft at will. I prefer to make the engagement between the block D and the adjacent edges of the removable and main web dovetailed, as shown; but this is not essential, and any form of the block D would be contemplated by me. So, also, while I have herein shown two of the blocksone on each side of the removable section-yet one of them would serve to hold the removable section in place, and I would be understood as covering one or more of the blocks by my invention.
What I claim is- 1. The combination, with a pulley having an opening from the center through the rim and a removable section filling said opening in the rim and the web adjacent thereto, of a block D, detachably tongued and grooved into engagement with the edge of the removable sect-ion and also with the pulley-web and Y detachable transversely to the thickness of the web independent of movement of the said removable section, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a pulley having an opening from the center through the rim, of a removable hub-section detachably secured in the opening, a removable web and rim section tongued and grooved to the web, and a block D, securing said web and rim section in position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE C. COWLES. Witnesses:
GEo. W. WENDEL, MERCER D. LINTON.
