FIRE ARM.

FIAWW/II i l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM \V. ARMING'UN AND HORACE A. BRIGGS, ()F NURlVlUll, CONNEC- TICU"; SAID ARMINGTON ASSIGNOR TO SAID BRIGGS ANI) IIARLES \Y. HOPKINS, SAMUEL S. HOPKINS, AND CHARLES ll. ALLEI ALL OF SAME PLACE.
FIRE-ARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,110, dated June 3, 1890. Application filedfehrnary 17, 189i). Serial No. 340,696- lNo model.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM ".AR1\IING- TON and HORACE A. BRIGGS, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of Norwich, county of New London, and State of Connecticut, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Arms, which improvements are fully set forth and described in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying sheet of drawing...
The object of our invention is to provide a cheap. serviceable, and positive device for locking together the barrel and frame in that class of arms in which the barrel is turned down to fit a corresponding hole in the frame. In such arms, while it is necessary that the frame and barrel be seen rely fastened together when the arm is in service, it is also desirable that the barrel-fastening be of such a nature that said barrel may be quickly removed without the aid of special tools.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of portions of a rifle frame and barrel, said parts being locked together by a screwkey fastening of our improved construction. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of Fig. 1 on line as Fig. 3 is a detached view (somewhat enlarged) of our improved screw-key, and Fig. 4- a 1011 gitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 5 is an outer face view of the nut c and its operating-handle, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of a nut formed substantially as an ordinary thumb-nut.
The letter a denotes the frame of an arm, I) the barrel, and c the screw-key fastening as a whole.
The lock proper of our device consists of a pin or key 0', which is preferably slightly tapered, and which passes through the frame at a point where it intersects and cuts into the periphery of the barrel, as in Patent No. 14,491, issued March 25, 1856. In said patent the pin serves as a locking key or wedge that may be driven into or out of place to lock or release the barrel; butour presentdevice differs from that of said patent in having connected with the locking pin or key means whereby said key may be forced into place or casilywithdrawn without the aid of a ban.- mer or other tool. Further, our loekingkey cannot by accident work loose and jar out of place. The outer (larger) end of our pin r: is shouldered down to enter a corresponding holein a ring-shaped section P, that is threaded on its periphery and adapted to screw into a threaded recess in frame a. The shouldered end of pin 0' is fitted loosely in section 0 and does not necessarily rotate with said section, but is prevented from leaving said section by a screw c', that is tapped into the end of the pin, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4. Projecting radially from the threaded section 1: is an operating-handle, which Iprefor to form as a simple lover c, as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5, although, if desired, two projcctions, substantially as in ordinary thumbnuts, could be provided, such double form of operating-handle being shown in Fig. (i of the drawin 7o \Vhen it is desired to lock together the barrel and frame, our described screw-key is entered in the frame and the threaded section 0 screwed home, which action forces the pin 0 forward into its seat in both frame and barrel and prevents their separation until nut is again unscrewed.
To prevent the entire withdrawal of pin (1', (in which case it might belost or misplaced,) we have tapped into frame a from its under side a screw (Z, whose end projects upward into a longitudinal groove 0 in said pin c, the said groove being out nearly but not quite to the end of the pin. \Vhen the pin is withdrawn, the end of screw (Z engages the end wall of groove c,and thus prevents the entire withdrawal. of the locking-pin.
Having thus described our claim-- 1. In combination with the frame and barrel of an arm of the class referred to, a locking-pin passing through the frame and across the barrel, and having revolubly secured to one end a threaded ring-section that may be screwed into a correspondingly-thrcaded recess in the frame, as set forth, said ring-sec invention, we
tion being provided with an operating-handle, all being substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the frame and barrel of an arm, a longitudinally-grooved pin (passing across the barrel) and having revolubly secured to one end a threaded ring-section that may be screwed into a correspondingly-threaded recess in the frame, and a screw tapped into said frame, with its end pro- 10 jecting into said longitudinal groove, all bein g as and for the purpose specified.
\VILLIAM \V. ARHING'IUN. HORACE A. BRIGGS.
