Description
UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
O. S. S. GRIFFING, OF ASHTABULA, OHIO.
IMPROVED PORTABLE FIELD-FENCE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 112,849, dated May 24, 1864.
To all whom. it may concern/f' Be it known that I, O. S. S. GRIFFING, of Ashtabula, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Field-Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Figs. 2 and 3 are views of base, braces, and standards.
Like letters referto like parts.
The nature of my invention relates to the general structure ot' the fence and the mode ot' putting it together, the construction being such that the fence adapts itself to any inequalities of the ground. The construction is also such that a division-fence can be started from any joint at pleasure, without the addition of extra braces. lhe panels are composed usually of four boards, A A A A, but more or less may be used. These boards may be eight or ten feet in length, or whatever length it is desirable to make the panel. They are nailed at suitable distances from each other to slats B, there being one near each end. The panels thus formed are considered completed. They are light, and easily handled and transported. These panels are joined together to make a fence by means ot' the base-board C, the standards D D', and braces E E', and which are shown de- Jcached from the fence in Figs. 2 and 3. rI`he baseboard is about three feet in length, and has a standard, D, nailed ijrmly to it near the the center and at right angles thereto. The. braces E E are also firmly nailed to the ends of the base-board C. The brace E is nailed rmly to the standard D, as shown in Fig. 2. rIhe upper end of the brace E is nailed to the u `per end of the brace E. The standard D is secured to the base C by mea-ns of a pin, F, so that it can be laid over, as indicated by the dotted lines G in Fig. 2, for the purpose of inserting the panels, as hereinafter described.
In putting this fence together the standard D is laid over, as above stated, the baseboard and parts attached being placed in the desired position, and the ends of two panels inserted so that they lap about three or four inches, as seen in panels H I in Fig. 1. The upright D is then moved up so as to press against the side of the panel next to it, and thus holding the two firmly together by inserting the pin b through the standard and brace. The opposite ends of' the panels can be elevated or depressed to suit the nature of the ground. In making a line fence all the panels are joined in the manner above stated.
In Fig. 3, e shows the upper end ofthe brace E, and immediately below it is shown a block, c, having the thickness of the brace E, which leaves an opening' between the brace E and and standard D. In turning a corner, or in starting oit a division-fence, the end of a panel is inserted between the standard D and brace E', the under side of the upper rail of the panel K resting upon the upper end of the brace E.
In taking the fence apart, the pin b is rst removed and the standard D thrown back, as seen at G, and the panels can be taken from their position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and for which I desire to obtain Let-ters Patent ofthe United States, is-
The special arrangement ofthe base C, the standard D D, braces 1L E', pins F and b, and block c, in combination with the panels A A A A B, the several parts being constructed and arranged as and for the. purpose herein set forth.
C. S. S. GRIFFING.
