B. .B. WESTON. ROLL PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
' No. 428,192. Patented May 20, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDW'ARD B. WESTON, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
ROLL-PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 428,192, dated May 20, 1890.
Application filed October 28, 1889. Serial No. 328,411. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD B. WEs'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have in vented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roll-Paper Holders and Cutters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of rollpaper holders and cutters in which the cutting-knife and its supporting-arms follow the roll by their own weight as the paper is re moved and the roll decreases in size; and it consists inthe construction and arrangement of parts, the novel features of which will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the aocon'ipanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder and cutter. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same.
A is a suitable base-piece, upon which is fastened the frameof the holder, consisting of two upright pieces or standards B and a cross or top bar 0. The roll of paper D is wound on a roller which is journaled by the pins E in notches n, cut in the uprights B.
The cutting-knife F, with its cutting-edge downward, is pivoted loosely in the lateral supports or arms G by the pivot-pins p. This knife is fashioned with a thick rounded back 11 to rest upon the paper and serve as a brake to the roll when the paper is being torn off. The lateral arms G are pivoted to the standard, so asto allow the knife to swing downward and follow the roll of paper as the roll decreases in size, and both arms and knife are made comparatively heavy, so as to rest upon the roll with some force while in use.
The knife F is pivoted below its center of gravity, so that the broad rounded back of the knife will always rest upon the paper, and to limit the rotation of the knife in its pivots the arms G are provided with the stops or guides c. \Vhen the roll of paper is placed between the standards, the cutting-knife will rest heavily on the paper, and When the desired quantity is wound oif the paper is drawn up against the knife-edge and torn ofi. The knife being loosely hung or pivoted in the supporting-arms, the back of the knife is pressed down on the paper in the act of tearing, and thus the roll of paper is held in place without the necessity of any brake other than the knife itself. The stops 0 limit the turning or tipping back of the knife, as Without them the knife would be apt to turn farther than desirable and sometimes turn completely over.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a roll-paper holder and cutter, the combination, with the frame and paper roll, of
lateral supporting-arms pivoted to the frame,
a cuttingknife loosely pivoted below its center of gravity to said arms, and stops or guides on said arms to limit the rotation of the knife, substantially as shown and described.
EDWARD B. WESTON. Witnesses:
