COMBINED (EASTER-SOCKET AND CORNER-BRACE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,662, dated May 13, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, CHARLES F. BLANDON, CHARLES F. Ross, and JOHN J. LUMM, citizens of the United States, residing at l\lichigan City, in the county of La Porte and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvemen ts in a Combined Caste r-Socket and Corner-Brace; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de- IO scription of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to various new and useful improvements in combined caster-sockets and corner-braces, adapted for use particularly with refrigerators, articles of furniture, &c., wherein angular supporting-legs or standards are used.

For a better comprehension of our invention, attention is invited to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of our improved caster-socket; Fig. 2, arear elevation of the 2 5 same.

The leg for the refrigerator or article. to which this invention is to be attached is composed of two wooden pieces A and B, joined together at right angles or at any angle de- 0 sired, provided the socket is cast for the same angle. To the inside of this leg is secured the socket C,which will now be described. It consists of a caster-socket and corner-brace combined, having two surfaces at and b, Fig. 2,

3 5 at right angles with each other or at any angle desired, which are adapted to fit up against the interior faces D D of the portions A B, Fig. 1, also provided with an opening E, to receive the shank of the caster, which, in the presentinstance,is slightly inclined,as shown, in order that the shank of the caster will fit snugly therein, thus preventing any lateral play; but it will be evident that this opening can be of any shape desired, as long as it con forms to the shape and style of the shank of the caster used. In the outer face of the caster, near the top thereof, and extending directly through to the opening E, is a rectangular hole, arranged and substantially as shown.

Through this hole any desired lubricant may be introduced to the castershank, which may therefore be always kept well oiled. The upper portion of the socket directly over the end of the shank is made somewhat thicker than the other parts, for the reason that most of the wear and strain come at this point. EX- tending out from the socket on each side thereof is a ing or car F F, having openings H H therein. The screws which pass through these openings engage with the sections A and B of the legs or supports. At the bottom of the socket, and directly beneath the lug or support, is formed the base-plate I of the socket, which extends out along the bottom of the two parts A and B. This base-plate I is provided with a number of openings L therein, through which pass a numberof screws, which engage with the under portion of the leg or support. It will there fore be seen that the socket forms a very solid brace for the two parts A and B, and strengthens the legs or standards very much. The sockets may be very easily placed and secured in position, and removed at will. Being cast in one piece out of metal, it is there by made very cheaply. 7 5

Although the socket and corner-brace combined is especially adapted for use with legs or standards constructed with two pieces, as we have above described, still, it will be evident that it may be applied to legs or standards of other construction by simply changing the form of the socket, without departing from the spirit of our invention.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new therein, and desire to secure 8 5 by Letters Patent, is as follows:

As a new article of manufacture, a combined caster-socket and corner-brace consisting of a quadrant-shaped socket portion C, adapted to fit up in the angle of the leg and having an opening near its upper end for the purposes mentioned, integral lugs F on said socket portion, and an integral base-piece I, all combined and arranged substantially as set forth. 5
