Description

NFETERS, PHOT0-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON D C lUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE@ FRANKLIN J. TERRELL, OF ANSONIA, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVED MACHINERY FOR FORMING HOOP-SKIRT CLASPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,608, dated May 3, 1864.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN J. TERRELL. of Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State ofConnecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machinery for Forming Metallic Articles by Pressure; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot this specification, in which- Figure lis a side view of a press having my invention applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical seltion ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal action of the same. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal view of the rotating cylinder which contains the female forming-dies.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My improvement is more particularly designed for the mannftcture of the various kinds of metallic clasps used in the manufactue of hoopskirts, and is attached to the ordinary cutting-out press by which the blanks are cut from the plate.
It consists in the employment, for forming the blanks after they have been cut to the required form and have passed through the cutting-die, of a male forming-die made of two or more attached but independently-movable parts, and a series of rotating female formingdies, combined and operating as hereinafter set forth.
A B is the framing of the press, containin g vertical guides for the reception and guidance of the slide C, which carries the cutting-punch D. This framing has in its upper part the bearing for the crank shaft E, whose crank c is connected with the slide C by means of a rod,F,for working the punch D. These parts are all substantially like the corresponding parts of cutting and punching presses in common use.
G is the cutting-die, in combination with which the punch D Works, fitted into the upper part of a hollow cast-iron block, H, which is bolted to the bed-plate B. Below the die Gr there is arranged horizontally in suitable bearings in the block H the rotating cylinder I, which contains the series of female formingdies b b, of which there may be any suitable number arranged at equal distances all around the cylinder. These dies are of any form that may be required. The cylinder I derives its rotary motion to present the dies b b succes sively under the die G, for the reception of the cut blanks, by means of a hooked pawl, c, and ratchet-wheel J, the said' wheel being fast on one end of the cylinder and having a number of teeth corresponding with the number of dies b b, and the said pawl being attached to the punch-slide C and operating' upon the said wheel to turn the cylinder the requisite distance every time the said slide rises with the punch after having cut out a blank. y
d e f is the male brmingdie, arranged in a horizontal position opposite to and perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder I, where it is fitted to slide in suitable guides in block H, for the purpose of operating in combination with the several dies b b, as they are successively presented opposite to it by the rotation of the cylinder I. This male forming-die is composed of three separate pieces arranged one above another, the upper and lower pieces, d and j', being connected rigidly together by means of abolt or pin, g, which 'passes through a longitudinal slot, h, in the middle piece, c, and so permits cl and j' to have a limited longitudinal movement independently of e. The pieces d andf are connected with the piece c by a spring, t', which is attached to a pin,j, secured in the upper piece, d, and to a pin, 7c, secured in a portion of the piece e, which projects beyond the front ends of d and f, and this spring holds back the pieces d and f as far as permitted by the bolt g, which comes in contact with the rear end of the sloth. The die thus constructed has the pin g, connected with one arm of ahorizontally-moving lever, L, which works on a fulcrum-pin, I, secured in the block H, and the other arm ot which is connected by a rod, m, with the lower arm of a lever, K, Which works on a fulcrumpin, n, secured in one side of the framing A B. The upper arm of this lever K is kept in contact with a cam, I), on the crankshaft E by means of a spring, p, applied to its lower arm. This cam is so arranged on the crankshaft that after the rotary movement of the cylinder I the said cam will, by its action through the lever K on the lever J, cause the latter lever to move the male die t e f toward the cylinder I. During the first part of this movement the pieces d, e, and f all move togethcr toward the opposite female die, b, to commence the bending and forming operation, and the middle piece, e, coming to a stop at an early stage ot' the bending, serves to hold the partly-bent blank in its proper position Wi th respect to the female die, While the independent movement ot' the pieces d and j' is continued to complete the bending.
Every time the cutting-punch descends it cuts out a blank and carries it down through the die G and into one of the dies b of the rotating cylinder A, after which the punch rises and the cylinder A is rotated by the paWLand-ratchet Wheel a distance corresponding with the spacing' of the dies. Two movements of the cylinder bring` the blank opposite to the male forming-die d e j', and on the blank being brongl'it to this position, the advance of the said die which then takes place causes the blank to bc formed into the clasp or other article required. The further rotation ot' the cylinder after the retraction of the male forming-die causes the clasp or other article to be picked ont of the die b by means of suitablyarranged fingers, (not. shoWn,) which pass between it and the die, and cause it to drop through an opening, q, in the bed-plate B.
Vhat I claim as my invention7 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The male formingdie d ef, composed of two or more independently-operating pieces, in combination with a series of rotating female forming-dies7 b b, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
FRANKLIN J. TERRELL.
