Description
T. c. HARGRAVE.
Car-Axle Box. I No. 42,578. v Patented May 3, I864. v -19 wllm w NITED STATES ATENT i FFIGEQ THOMAS C. HARGRAVE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-AXLE LUBRICATORS.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS (J. HARGRAVE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Lubricators for Oar-'Wheels and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the lubricator through the line y 3 Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the lubricator through the line .10 .r, Fig. 1.
My invention and improvement consist in the combination and arrangement of a bent spring and lubricating wheel or roller with thejournal and housing in such a way as not to require any adjustment, and insuch a way that the bent spring, with the lubricating wheel or roller, does not require to be attached or fastened to the housing, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
to is the wheel of an ordinary car.
I) is the journal or axle of the car.
0 is the lubricating wheel or roller, which is supported or carried in bearings by the bent spring cl, and is of such a size as to reach nearly to the bottom of the journal-box, and thus secure a constant supply of oil or other lubricating substance, the elasticity of the spring keeping the wheel or roller 0 in contact with and slightly pressed against the lower part of the journal or axle b, said pressure being sufficient to cause the revolution of said wheel or roller, and thus secure a constant transfer of oil or other lubricating substance to the axle. The bent or \/-shaped spring dis of such a length as to nearly fill the space between the sides of thejournal-box. It is not fastened to the housing in any way, but is simply slipped into its place in the lower part of the journal box, one arm of the spring resting 011 the bottom or lower plate of the box, and the friction between said spring and the bottom of the box is sufficient to keep the spring in place in all ordinary uses of the parts with which it is connected, the other arm of the spring d,which supports or carries the lubricating wheel or roller 0, being in such a position as to hold the said wheel or roller immediately below thejournal, with which the said wheel or roller is kept constantly in contact by the elasticity of said bent spring d.
e is the oil or other lubricating substance.
f is the lid or door of the journalbox, by means of which admission is obtained to the inside of the journal-box for replenishing the oil or other lubricating substance when ncc' essary, and g is the housing of the journal-box.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination and arrangement of the bent spring d and lubricating wheel or roller 0 with the journal b and the housing 9, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
T. O. HARGRAVE.
