SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,452, dated April 15, 1890.

To cz-ZZ whom, it may concern.:
Be it known that LDAvID @.PAIGE, a cirizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, coun ty of lVayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Crane-Tongs; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of au apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lever or tongs.
It is the purpose of my invention to produce au apparatus for charging and discharg ing articles or vessels into or from an oven.
In the instance illustrated in the drawings I have shown it adapted for handling large metallic cylindrical rings used in the construction of metallic beer-casks into and from an enameling-oven, although it will be under-V stood, of course, that for, articles of other shapes the forms of the jaws may be altered to correspond thereto, and that, instead of being made to handle simply a single article, it may be adapted to handle pots or vessels which are filled-as, for instance, the annealingpots in a malleable-iron works, zc.
In carrying out my invention, A represents an overhead track or railway of suitable construction. That shown is strong and convenient and consists of two rails c, sustained by truss-work of uprights d and braces c2. This is suitably supported from above. Depending from this is a crane B, sustained at the top by, preferably, 'four wheels B', twoupon each rail a. At its lower end it is engaged by collars b to a trunnion-bar C', to which the These collars b are preferably provided with supportingstems h', which are made adjustable up and down by means of adjoining nuts b2. This affords means for regulating the height of the tongs or lever to any convenient level to conform to any work that is habitually handled.
T-he tongs are constructed essentially as follows: To the shaft or lever C cross-arms C2 are fixed, and to the shaft and cross-arms the sliding jaws C3 are engaged. These are connected by pitmen c to a central rotary disk c', and this disk is engaged with a handlever C4 by a rod c3, so that by forcing this hand-lever toward the jaws the latter are closed towardtheir common center upon the ring or other object that is being handled, and by forcing the hand-lever in the opposite direction the jaws are expanded. At the other end of the shaft or lever C is the lifting-handle C5, and a counterpoise-weight C is provided f or use when desirable. In handling large rings or similar objects in enameling-ovens or other ovens it is important that the tongs shall deliver the object at a particu lar deiined place, and it is equally important to grasp the article with accuracy and without disturbance when removing it from the furnace. To accomplish this object I unite the tongs or lever rigidly to the depending crane, so as to have no lateral motion, as shown in the drawings, whereby they are caused to move accurately to the given position in charging and discharging. In other cases, however, Where small pots or articles are to be charged into diiferent parts of the furnace provision is made for so doing by swiveling the tongs to the lower end of the crane, as shown by the dotted lines, which will enable the tongs to be turned laterally about this point as a vertical pivot.
I would have it understood that where the object or pot to be handled is square or of other shape the jaws may be correspondingly shaped to accommodate the same, and other details maybe varied without departing from my invention.
To operate the device, the workmen seize the handle C5 and bring the jaws to the article to be lifted. Then by pulling the handlever the jaws are opened. ,They are then brought into position, embracing the object, and the jaws are closed upon it by the handlever. It is then lifted and run forward into or back out of the oven. The crane, of course, moves along the tracks c.
IVhat I claim isl. The apparatus for charging and discharging articles from an oven, the same consisting of the combination, with an overhead track,
of a crane with a rigid arm projecting downward therefrom, tongs provided with a trunnion-shaft engaged with the crane, sliding jaws engaged by pitmen with a rotary disk, and a connecting-rod and hand-lever for operating the jaws by rotating the disk, and a lifting-handle at the free end of the lever C, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the tongs and the overhead track, of adepending crane engaging one with the other, said crane consisting of a rigid frame supported at the top by four wheels adapted to travel along said track, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the overhead track, the crane, and the tongs, of a horizontal trunnion-shaft at right angles to the shaft of the tongs, the latter lengaged rigidly with said trunnion-shaft, whereby the tongs may be moved up and down about the horizontall hand-lever, whereby the jaws are opened or closed, substantially as described.
