UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. ELLIOTT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FILTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,374, dated April 8, 1890.
Application filed May 1, 1889. Serial No. 309,230- (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. ELLIOTT,a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in filters, having for its object the provision of a simple and highlyefficient frame or holder for readily and easily holding or retaining a filtering-cloth in position, permitting of the removal thereof when desired.
The invention consists in a frame or holder having an elongated or lower V-shaped portion for holding or retaining a straining cloth or disk in a funnel or collar, said lower elongated portion keeping such cloth or disk away from contact with the inner surfaceof the funnel or collar, thus rendering nearly the entire filtering-cloth useful for filtering purposes, resulting in rapid filtration and great saving of time.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing my invention employed in connection with a funnel or collar. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts separated. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view of a modification.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the frame or holder composed, preferably, of one continuous wire strand formed into a series of coils a of different diameter, the widest coil being at the top. Said coils may, however, be all of the same diameter. From the lowermost narrow coil a the wire strand is extended into an approximately V-shaped extension a projecting some distance below the upper series of coils and preserving the contour of the inverted cone presented by the coils a. The end of this wire strand after being formed into the V-shape extension is passed up through the coils along which it projects, or it may be connected to the topmost coil.
B is a disk or piece of any preferred filtering material, and is designed to fit over the lower V-shape portion of the frame or holder and to be firmly held in place within a funnel or collar 0 by the upper.series of coils a. Thus it will be seen that by means of the frame or holder above described the filtering-cloth is firmly held within afunnel or collar 0, and is kept from hugging against the sides thereof, as occurs where the cloth is placed loosely within a funnel. The upper coils of this frame or holder bind the cloth against the sides of the funnel or collar 0 by reason of their spring-like action. By contacting these coils, the ends of the wires being free permitting thereof, the frame or holder and filtering material can be readily and easily removed from the funnel or collar and a new piece of filtering material substituted when necessary. The lower V-shape or elongated portion of the frame or holder serves to gage the length or diameter of the filteringcloth, as well as to hold the same out of contact with the sides of the funnel.
In Fig. 4 I have shown the coils of wire as being wound from the top downward and the upper end of said wire clutching the upper coils, while the other end is secured to the vertical portion of the V-shape extension a The-funnel or collar G is here shown provided with a lower flange or shoulder d whereon the lower coil may rest. This funnel or collar can be either tapering or perfectly vertical, since the coils are preferably of the same diameter.
My invention thus constructed is extremely simple and embodies many advantages in point of general efficiency over all filtering devices heretofore known or used.
I claim as my invention- 1. The frame or holder herein described, composed of a continuous piece of wire formed into an upper series of coils and a lower elongated or V-shape portion, and having its end extended up through said coils, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the funnel or collar having the lower flange or shoulder, of the holder having a series of coils resting on said flange or shoulder, and the filtering cloth or disk, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES E. ELLIOTT.
