UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK FOYVLER AND AMOS M. ULMER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WEATHER-STRIP FOR wmoows.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,752, dated March 18, 1890.
Application filed December 19, 1889. Serial No. 334,308- (No model.)
To all whom it. may concern:
' Be it known that we, FRANK FOWLER and AMOS M. ULMER, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improve.
ments in Weather-Strips for Windows, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide a 'raised has its lower edge at or adjacent to the window-sill. This object we attain in the manner hereinafter set fort-h, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are transverse sections of part of a window-frame with its sill and sash, illustrating our improved weather-strip in difierent positions.
In that class of window=sashes in .which the sash is lowered into a recess in the frame or in the structure below the window-opening in order to open the window, difficulty has been experienced in making a weatherproof joint with the bottom of the sash when it is raised, and it is with the view of overcoming this objection that our invention has been devised.
. In the accom an in drawin s A re re sents part of the side frame of a window, B the sill of the same, and D the window-sash, which when elevated so as to close the window-opening, as shown in Fig. 1, terminates at a point just above the sill, and in opening the window is allowed to drop into the recess a in the frame or structure below the window-opening, as shown in Fig. 2,
Extending across the frame of the window, outside of the sash and above the sill B, is a Weatherstrip F, consisting, preferably, of a plate of thin sheet metal having at its ends trunnions 1), adapted to hearings in plates d on the side frames of the window, the pivot-points of the plate being so situated in respect to the sill and sash that when the sash is elevated the plate will assume an inclined position such as shown in Fig. 1, the outer portion of the plate extending outover the inclined top-of the sill and theinner portion of the plate being bent upward for hearing against the rounded rib f, formed on the bottom rail of the sash, so as to form a close joint therewith, 'the plate being normally retained in this position by reason of a- Weight g, secured to the plate in such a position that the preponderance of weight will always be on the outer side of the pivotal center of the same, so that the outer portion I caused to yield, the inner portion of the plate being depressed into a recess h in the sill and the outer portion of the plate being ele vated so that its ends occupy recesses c' in the side frames of the window, as shown in Fig. 2, the plate assuming its normal position again as soon as the sash has been raised sufficiently to permit the inner portion of the plate to follow up'the bottom of the sash in its rising movement. By this means the joint is rendered dust and wind proof, and the entrance of water beneath the sash is effectually prevented, as the water striking the plate F is thrown'downward from the same and clear of the sill.
Having thus described our invention, We claim and desire to secure by Letters Patente- 1. The combination of the windowframe, and the sash constructed to be lowered into a recess in said frame, with the weather-strip pivoted to said frame, and having a portion for engaging with the lower edge of the sash when thelatter is raised, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the window frame, and the sash constructed to be lowered into a recess in said frame, with a pivoted strip having an outerdeflecting portion, an inner portion constructed to engage with the lower edgeof the sash, and a weight whereby said strip is caused to be self-adj Listing to the sash as the latter rises, substantially as specified.
'3. The combination of the window-frame, and the sash constructed to be lowered intoa recess in the same and having ag'ounded pronames to this specification in the presence of jection atits lower edge, with the weathertwo subscribing witnesses.
strip pivoted 'to the frame, and having an a FRANK FOWLER. upwardly-curved inner portion to en gage with t AMOS M. ULMER. 5 the rounded rib or projection on the sash, sub- Witnesses: r
Stantially as specified. R. SoHLEIoHER,
' In testimony whereof we have signed our HARRY SMITH.
