My invention relates to the Construction of that class of metallic radiating-coils for heating purposes in which groups of vertical radiating-pipes are used, such pipes containing steam or hot water and communicating heat to the surrounding atmosphere; and the objects of my invention are to eftect iniprovements in the method of forming the junctions, in aft'ord- V ing increased facilities for erecting, attaching, and detaohing the pipes, making good the joints, and otherwise manipulating the same.
In carrying out my invention I form the vertical pipes with side passages at or near each end, for the circulation of the water or steam through the same. S uitable sockets may be cast upon the faces of the lower main casting and upper horizontal pipes, and corresponding flanges or rings or other suitable provisions upon the vertical pipes, round which' the elastic washers are placed to secure fluidtight joints; or I may form such joints of flat surfaces with planed faces, metal and metal, or by equivalent means. The pipes are united to the main casting by means of bolts, screws, studs, and nuts, clips, lugs, or equivalent `means, the joints being made good by rubber,
asbestus, woodite, or other suitable rings,
washers, or packing red-lead gasket, or otherwise, as aforesaid. The main casting maybe fitted with single, double, treble, or other sets or groups of vertical pipes, either on one side or on both sides, special provision being made in the main casting and in or upon the detachable pipes to receive the bolts, screws,
v studs, or nuts and washers, clips, lugs, or
equivalent devices, as required. By means of the aforesaid arrangements I amenabled to remove and refiX any one or more of the vertical pipes without disturbing and of the others orthe main casting itself. The main casting is preferably fitted -with chambers to adnit theexternal air, by means of suitable junctions, such air rising through suitable openings to the vertical pipes, and being thereby warmed before it mixes With that in the apartment. i

Referring to Figs. l and 2, ais the main casting, anda' isalongitudinalchannelformed in a vertically-projecting extension, which constitutes a part of the main casting, and Operating as a horizontal pipe in connection with the vertical pipes d d. The vertical face of the-wall of the horizontal pipe a' is shown formed with openings and sockets to receive the laterally-projecting collars cast on the lower ends of the pipes d d. These j unctions are secured by screws e e, as shown in Fig. 2. Packing-ringsmay be used to render' the unctions Water and steam tight.
