Description

' UNITED-l STATES PATENT OFFICE..
H. BLOOD, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANAQ |MPaovED CLOTHES-Dalen.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 42,160, dated April 5, 1864.
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, H. S. BLOOD, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Window Olothes-Drier and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a partof this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side sectional view of my invention taken in the line wir, Fig. 2 5 Fig. 2, a plan or view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two gures.
This invention relates'to a new and improved device for hanging clothes from a window for the purpose of drying the former.
The invention consists in the employment or use of brackets, such as are commonly used by painters to enable them to paint the outside of windows, in connection with a platform and also in connection with poles attached to the brackets and arranged in such amanner as to be. capable of being rotated, all the parts being so constructed, applied, and arranged as to admit of the device being very readily' applied to a window and removed therefrom, and also to admit of the wet clothes being suspended from the device, and when dry removed from it with the greatest facility.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
AA represent two brackets constructed each of a straight bar, a, having a pendant, b, secured by a brace, a, with a lateral projection, d, at its lower end. The bars a have each a series of holes, e, made vertically through it, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, and the outer ends of said bars are each provided with a hook, f, and they are. also provided with abutton, g, the latter being at same distance from their outer ends.
B B represent metal pins, which may beinserted in any of the holes e of the bars a of the brackets and C is a platform of rectangular form, whichis placed on the brackets A A, the front edge of the platform being fitted under the hooks j' f and its back edge resting against the buttons g, which are adjusted or turned so as to lap over the back edge of the platform, the latter being prevented from slipping laterally by means of cleats l1, attached to its um der surface at each side of the bars a of the brackets. B y means of these hooks f, buttons g, and cleats h, the 'platform may be readily of the platform there is attached a similar seg-- ment-bar, k, which is concentric with t', and extends the whole width of the platform, as shown in Fig. 2. The bar la has aseries of notches, l, made in it at equal distances apart and in radial lines with the holesj in the bar t', and to the upper surface of the bar 7o there are attached a series of buttons, m, which may be turned so as to cover the notches l.
D represents a series of poles, which may be of cylindrical form and of any suitable length. The inner or back ends of these poles are provided with journals a, so as to fit and turn freely in the holes j of the bar t', said poles also fitting in the notches l of the bar 7c and se cured therein by the buttons m. The portion 0 of the poles between the two bars k t' are larger in diameter than the other parts in order to admit of the poles being readily turned when adjusted in proper place and for the purpose presently described.
'lhe device is used as follows: The brackets A A are adjusted or placed on the sill of the Window, the projections d of the pendants b bearing against theouter side of the wall, and the pins B B are inserted in the holes e so as to bear against the inner side of the wall. The platform C is then adjusted and secured upon the brackets, and the clothes to be dried are then placed upon the poles D in the same Way that they are placed on an ordinary clothesline, they are secured on the poles by clam s E constructed of sheet metal, galvanized' ir ,or any metal that will not oxidize and soil the clothes may be used. These clamps may be constructed in any proper manner so as to admit of the clothes being rolled up on the poles in the same way that a flag is wound upon its staff. The poles when the clothes are wound upon them are secured in the bars 7c i, and the poles are then'turned by grasping the parts o so that the clothes will be unwound from the poles and remain suspended therefrom.
The poles D, it will be seen, have a radial position, so that a space will be allowed between the clothes of the several poles, to alloT the air to circulate freely around them. When the clothes are dry, the poles D are turned so that the former may be wound upon the latter and removed or taken in from the Window with the greatest facility and Without the liability of becoming' soiled by contact with the Window or any part of the building.
This device when provided with six poles, ten feet each in length, is capable of having as many clothes suspended from it for drying as may be placed on two ordinary clothes'` lines. It may be constructed at a very moderate cost. All the parts with the exception of the pins B may be of wood.
I would remark that small pins q may be driven into the inner sides of the leidants b to catch under the front part of the windowsill and prevent the device being raised up from the sill under the action of the wind.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The employment or use of a series of poles, D, fitted to a platform, C, or to any suitable fixture attached to a Window-sill, in such a manner that said poles may be capable of being rotated for the purpose of Winding the clothes upon them and unwinding the clothes therefrom, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The segment or curved bars k t', attached to the platform C, and provided, respectively, with notches l, buttons m, and holes j, for the purpose of securing the poles D to the platform, as herein described.
3. The combination of the brackets A A, poles D, and platform C, the latter being provided with suitable fastenings for the poles, and all arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
H. S. BLOOD.
