UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
FRED H. CUTLER, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
BLOTTERSUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,390, dated February 18, 1890.
To @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRED H. CUTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blotter-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to writinglesks and is an attachment therefor, consisting of a blotter-shelf.
As is well known, the ordinary sheet inkblotter is liable to become and frequently is commingled with and obscured by other sheets and papers upon the desk, th ereby causing vexatious searches and annoying delays.
The object of my invention, therefore, is to prevent the possibility of such annoyances by providing, iirst, a suitable receptacle or support (Within or upon` the desk) for the blotter, and, second, to provide a means Whereby the blotter-sheet, after use and When released, Will automatically return to the place assigned to it and Without aid from the operator.
In carrying out the objects of my invention I provide the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichd Figure l is a sectional view of the blottersupport as it appears secured to the back of a desk. Fig. 2 is atop plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a central pori tion or fragment cfa desk provided With my attachment, a'nd is designed to further illustrate its position and location upon the desk. Like letters refer to corresponding parts in each lligure of the drawings.
A represents the writingbed or top of the desk, and B represents the back portion above the Writingbed, all of ordinary construction, but with portions broken away.
C represents a support or standard detacllably secured to the back portion of the desk just 'above 'the writing bed. The
standard is provided with a central openingc, and to its base is secured by means of screws the bifurcated support D, as shown in Fig. l.. The bifurcated support D is provided. with a Application filed September 4, 1889. Serial No,322,994. (No model.)
hole or opening just back of Where the two prongs join each other, as shown in Fig. 2, and which opening is designed for the passage of the cord G, as shown, and at the other end or outer portion of each prong is secured one end of a bit, of some flexible material. The other end of this material is secured to the under side of the tilting shelf E, as shown, and serves as a hinge therefor. The shelf E is oblong and provided With a central longitudinal opening extending nearly its whole length and designed for the free passage of the cord G, as shown. Its normal position upon D is tilted or with the front end resting upon the desk, as shown in Figs. 1 and2; but when loaded with the blotter F and Weight H it assumes the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. l. This throws the blotter up clear of the 'writing-bed of the desk and leaves a free space beneath it.
rlhe cord G, used for returning the blotter to its shelf, passes over the crotch of D and down through a hole in the Writing-bed, and is secured to t-he small Weight l-I, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
Vhat I clailn, therefore, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is l. The combination, With a Writing-desk, the Writingbed of which is provided with a perforation o, of standard C, having slot c, bifurcated bracket D, secured to said standard, tilting she'lf E, hinged to the bracket and operated and controlled by means of cord G, having Weight H and 'blottcr F attached thereto, all as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in Writing-desks provided With bracket D, secured thereto, of a tilting shelf E, hinged to said bracket, as set forth, and provided With a central opening e, through which extends cord G for controlling and operating the same, said cord having se `cured at one' end a Weight H and` at the other a blotter F, all as and for the purpose set forth.
