WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,904, dated January 21, 1890.
` .Application filed September 8, 1888. Serial No. 284,858. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that JOSEPH D.- YOUND, deceased, late a citizen of the United States, residing at Rich Hill, in the county of Bates" and State of Missouri, did invent certain new and useful Improvements in Vashing-Machines; and I, MAGGIE YOUND, of same place, administratrix of the estate of the said JOSEPH D. YOUND, deceased, do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in washing-machines, having for its object the provision of new and improved highly-efficient means for readily and easily heating the water contained in said machine and keeping the same at a uniform temperature, and also the provision of a new and improved form of revolving clothescylinder, wherein the clothes are placed during the Washing operation.
The invention also comprises the details of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of the improved washingrnachine. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a front end elevation. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the revolving clothes-cylinder. Fig. 5 is aview with the removable section of said cylinder removed.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the vtank or receptacle, provided at its corners with the usual supporting-legs a, and this tank or receptacle is Vcentrally divided by a vertical partition-board a into two chambers or compartments a2 a3. The rearmost chamber or compartment a? serves as a reservoir for holding or retaining hot water, and the same is provided with a cover B, having a central removable section b, which has a curved handle-bar b', for readily removing the same when it is desired to gain .access to said reservoir.
C is a stove or fire-box secured to the forward end of the bottom d of tank or receptaole A, and the same is provided with a front sliding door d', through which fuel is fed to said stove or fire-box. From the rear end of this stoveor fire-box extends a horizontallydisposed flue D, suitably secured or held in contact with bottom d by means of a long retaining-plate d2, attached to said bottom. The rear end of this flue D is bent into a vertical portiond, which extends up to or beyond the top of the machine.
E is the revolving clothes-cylinder, composed of two end pieces e e, connected together by bars e', let into grooves or recesses of said end pieces. Around this cylinder is passed a perforated metallic band or casing e2, secured by suitable means to said end pieces. This revolving cylinder E is provided with a removable section F, composed of sections or portions of the end pieces e and the band or casing e2, said sections or portions of the end pieces being connected by one of the bars c. From each of the end pieces e of cylinder E project short studs or pins ff, designed to enter corresponding grooves f f in the end pieces of removable section F.
G is an approximately U-shaped band or loop, the ends of which are eccentrically pivoted at g to the end pieces e of cylinder E, and the same is designed to hold or secure the removable section F of said cylinder firmly in position after the clothes orI other articles are placed within said cylinder. This cylinder is provided with two short pivotal rods g g2, projecting from its end pieces and resting in grooves in the sides of chamber or compartment a3, wherein said cylinder ro` tates. The rod g2 is extended into a crankhandle g3 to permit of rotating said cylinder.
Cylinder E and chamber or compartment a3 are covered or inclosed by a semicircular cover H, the end pieces of which rest on the upper edges of the sides of tank or receptacle A.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that water placed in the reservoir or chamber ai' will be heated by the heat arising from flue D, a fire being started in stove or hre-box C. After removing cover I-I and the section Fof cylinder E clothes are placed in the latter, and said section is secured by loop or band G, and a` sufficient quantity of IOO Water is placed in compartment 0,3, and after replacing the cover H the operator, by grasping and turning crank-handle g, causing the revolution of cylinder E, Will readily and quickly effect the Washing or cleansing of the clothes. The heat arising from lue D heats the Water in the chambers or compart-v ments a2 a3, and the Water in the latter compartment can be replaced by a fresh supply from chamber or compartment a2.
The invention comprises advantages in point 'of simplicity, durability, general efficiency, and inexpensiveness.
What is claimed as the invention is l. In a Washing-machine, the combination, With a tank provided With a Washing-compartment, of a foraminated rotatable clothescylinder disposed in the latter and comprising a main and a removable section provided, respectively, With studs or pins and perforations to receive the same, and a band eccentrically pivoted to the ends of the main section and adapted to be adjusted over the removable section to retain the same in place, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Theherein-described foraminated clothescylinder, .comprising the main section provided with the studs or pins f and with the band Gr, eccentrically pivoted to the ends of said section, and the section F, provided with perforations f f', coinciding with and receiving the' studs, said band G being adapted to retain the studs in engagement with the perforations, substantially as set forth. y
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses. v MAGGIE YOUND,
