Description

W. W. BRINKERHOFF.
UNK; No. 419,819. Patented'Jan. 21,1890,
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FEIGE.
WILLIAM W. BRINKERIIOFF, OF ALBANY, NEIV YORK.
TRUNK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,819, dated January 21, 1890..
Application filed July 3,1889- Serial No. 316,414. (No model) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it it known that I, WILLIAM l/V. BRINKER- HOFF, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Trunk, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to trunks constructed with fixed fastenings for strengthening and holding the trunk together, and has for its object to provide a trunk having fixed fastenings which will be eifective and durable in strengthening and holding the trunk together, and by means of which trunk-straps are dispensed with, and the strain on the lock and hinges of the trunk arising from rough usage is relieved.
The invent-ion consists in a trunk provided with fixed fastenings, constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a view of the front of a trunk constructed in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section thereof on the line 00 a; of Fig. 1.
1 indicates an ordinary form of trunk constructed with the longitudinal sheathing or protective strips 2 extending over the bottom and front and back of the trunk-body 3 and over the cover 4, and having metallic anglepieces 5 at the corners. The cover 4 is connected to the body 3'by hinges of the usual form, and is fastened by a suitable lock 6.
In order to strength en the trunk and relieve the hinges and look from strain, flat strips of metal 7 are secured to the trunk by rivets or otherwise, inlieu of trunk-straps. The strips 7 extend over the cover and body of the trunk beneath the strips 2, whereby they are securely held in place and are out of the way of being caught and torn off. The strips 7, being of metal, cannot be cut, broken, lost, or stolen, as leather trunk-straps are liable to be.
At the rear of the trunk, at the junction of the cover A with the trunk-body 3, the strips 7 are connected by strap-hinges S, which overlap the ends of the strips 7, and are riveted to the latter and to the trunk cover and body,
and form a strong connection, besides relieving the strain on the regular trunk-hinges.
usage, so that even were the trunk to become broken it would be held together and the contents prevented from falling out.
lVhile the invention has been shown and described asapplied to a particular form of trunk, it is obvious that it may be used with and will be serviceable for any form of box, crate, or other receptacle having a cover.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new anddesi re to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A receptacle having a cover provided with metallic fastening-strips secured to the body of the receptacle and its cover, said strips being connected by hinges and looks at the junction of the cover and body of the receptacle, substantially as shown and described.
2. A trunk having a hinged cover and lock and metallic strips extending across the cover and body of the trunk and secured thereto with supplemental hinges, and locks connecting the strips 7 at the junction of the cover with the trunk-body and secured thereto, substantially as shown and described.
3. The trunk 1, having the hinged cover l. with lock 6, longitudinal sheathing-strips 2, extending over the cover and body of the trunk, metallic strips 7, extending across and secured to the cover and body of the trunk beneath the strips 2, and supplemental hinges 8 and locks 9, connecting and secured to the strips 7 and the trunk at the junction of the trunk body and cover, substantially as set forth.
