UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSKAR PAUL LOCHMANN, OF GOHLIS, NEAR LEIPSIO, SAXONY', GERMANY.
MU SIC-PLATE FOR MECHANICAL INSTRUMENTS.
SPECIFICATION formng part of Letters Patent No. 417,649, dated December 17, 1889.
Application filed May 27, 1889. Serial No. 312,200. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSKAR PAUL LOCH- MANN, a subject of the King of Prussia and Emperor of Germany, residing at Gohlis, near Leipsic, in the Kingdom of Saxony, German Empire, have invented new and useful Iniprovements in Musie-Plates for Mechanical Musical Instruments, of which the following` is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in music-plates or note-pin plates used in mechanical musical instruments. The pins or lugs of the said note-pin plates or musicplates, when formed by being partially punchcd out of the metal plate and bent up at right angles to the plane thereof, are liable to be bent or erippled or even entirely broken off after the plates have been in use but a short time.
The object of this invention is to obviate this defect in such music-plates; and it consists in partially punching out and bending up a second piece of metal immediately adjaoent to each note pin or lug in such a manner as to act as an abutment therefor and support it against the bending strain which g comes upon it in the operation of the musical instrument.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming` part of this specification, wherein- Figure l is a face View of a portion of a music-plate; and Fig. 2 is a section thereof on line fy, showin'g`two such pins or lugs as formed by punching out and bending up from the plate, together with their respective abutments. Fig. 3 is a section representing,` the double punch used for the purposc of simultaneously forming the pin or lug and its abutment.
The same letters of reference indicate like plane thereof; and b are their respective abutments, also formed of a piece of metal partially punchcd out from the plate and bent up immediately in rear of each pin or lug` a, the punching operation being so performed that the abutment is bent toward the pin or -lug a, so that the free end abuts directly against the rear side of the pin or lug a and supports the latter at the side opposite to that at which the strain comes upon it When in operation.
The note pin or lug and its abutment are punchcd and bent simultaneously by means of a pair of punches c cl, fixed adjustably in the same holder h of a suitable punchingpress operated by a cam or in any other convenient manner. The punch c stamps out and bends up the .pin or lug` a at right angles to the plate p, while the punch d punches out the abutment Z) and at the same time bends it toward the rear side of lug a, this bending of the abutment b being effected by beveling` the cutting end of the punch at such an acute angle that as it penetrates the plate gradually the beveled face imparts a graduallyincreasing' curl or bend to the piece of metal partially punchcd out from the plate, and so causes it to curl up, as shown, t-he punch d being set slightlyin advance of the punch c.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of the said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- A music-Sheet having the punchcd-out pins a and the punched-out abutments b, the latter being bent so that their free ends bear against the pins, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony Whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OSKAR PAUL LOCHMANN.
