- UNIT D STATES? PATENT OFFI ASHER ABRAM BRQWER, or CRESTON, IOWA.
CARPET-STRETCH ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,627, dated December 17, 1889. Application filed May 25,1889. Serial No. 312,062. (No model.)
To 60% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ASHER ABRAM BROWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Creston, in the county of Union and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of..the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to carpet-stretchers;
- and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts herein after fully described and claimed. r
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the carpet-stretcher, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same from'above.
A is a bar provided with ratchet-teeth a on its upper surface and guide-grooves a in its sides.
Bis a prong secured to one end of the said bar and adapted to be driven into the floor close to the wall.
0 is a cross-bar provided with the inclined points 0, adapted .to engage with the carpet, and D are short guides secured to the bar 0 on each side of bar A and engaging with the said guide-grooves; E is a loop having its ends secured to the cross-bar O and adapted to engage with the ratchet-teeth, so that the cross-bar cannot -slip back.
F is a hand-lever provided with a forked lower end f, which end is provided with holes f aboutthe middle of its length, and is journaled upon the loop E on each side of bar A.
The device is double-acting. By moving the hand-lever in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1 the loop G is caused to push against the ratchet-teeth, and the cross-bar is dragged forward until the roller h, by meeting and pressing against the under side of the bar A, causes the loop E to engage with the ratchet, and thereby prevents the cross-bar from slipping back. The hand-lever is then moved in the reverse direction from the arrow in Fig. 1, the looped pulling-pawl H engages with the ratchet, and the cross-bar'is again dragged forward. The device is thus operated continuously by moving the hand-lever in opposite directions alternately. The weight of the hand-lever and the other parts connected to it is usually sufficient to cause the loop E to engage with the ratchet; but at the termination of each full stroke of the hand-lever the roller it forces the said loop into gear, so that the device cannot let the carpet slip back. The roller also prevents the hand-lever and its pawl from rising too high and throwing too great a strain upon the short guides which slide in the grooves in the sides of bar A, and only permit the cross-bar to have a limited rocking motion. The side arms 6 of loop E are elastic, and, together with the short guides 'D, permit the cross-bar C to have a rocking motion, so that the lever F may rise and the loop E clear the teeth of the ratchet. The said side arms e are preferably crossed under the ratchet-bar and connected by the ring 6. This ring runs against the under side of the rack-bar and prevents the loop from rising too far.
What I claim is- 1'. In a carpet-stretcher, the combination, with a ratchet-bar, the sliding cross-bar, and the short guides permitting the said cross-bar to have a slight rocking motion, of the pivotloop engaging with the ratchet-teeth and provided with elastic side arms secured to said cross-bar, the hand-lever pivoted on said loop, the pushing-pawl pivoted to the hand-lever above the ratchet-bar, and the pulling-pawl pivoted to the hand-lever below the ratchetbar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a carpet-stretcher, the combination, with the ratchet-bar, the sliding cross-bar, and the short guides sliding in grooves in the ratchet-bar and permitting said cross-bar to rock slightly, of the pivotloop engaging with of the fork of the hand-leverbelow the ratchet- [O the ratchetteeth and provided with elastic bar, substantially as and for the purpose set side arms crossed underneath the ratchet-bar forth. and secured to the said cross-bar, the ring In testimony whereof I affix my signature 5 journaled 011 said crossed arms, the hand-lever in presence of two Witnesses.
pivoted on said pivot-loop, the pushing and ASHER ABRAM BRO\VER. pulling pawls pivoted to the said hand-lever Witnesses:
above and below the ratchet-bar, respectively, \V. G. P. MUNBENDARA,
and the roller journaled between the prongs L. G. TOWNE.
