PAD LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,602, dated December 1'?, 1889.
Application iiled October 2, 1888. Serial No. 286,982. (Model.)
T0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHANN STRAUBINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. f
The object of this invention is to simplify the construction of spring-padlocks, to reduce the number of parts required in their construction, and at the same time 4make a stronger and more efiieient lock than has heretofore been made.
The invention consists in the improved lock and in the combinations and arrangements of parts thereof, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the claim. j
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate l similar parts in each of the several figures,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a lock with the top plate removed embodying my improvement, showing the parts locked. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same, showing the key in position, with the parts unlocked. Fig.` 3 is a section through line X,Fig..1; and Fig. 4L is a section through line Y, Fig. 2.
In said drawings, a indicates a lock-case. Z) is a sliding bolt formed at its outward end with a hoop divided into two parts b and b2 and pivoted together at b3. The outside end of the part bis provided with a projection b4 and rounded, as at b5, Fig. 2. This projection is so constructed that whenzthe parts Z2 and b2 are swung together it shall lie parallel with the bolt b, as shown in Fig. 1.

a2 and a3 are guides made integral with the plate of case a, and between which the bolt ZJ slides. The guide a2 is slotted, so as to allow the free passage of tumblers c c between the upper and lower plates of the case a.. The upper side of the rod b is also slotted transversely to allow the passage of the tumblers c c and engagement therewith. These tumblers are slotted on their upper sides, so as to allow the admission of a key d. One of the walls of the slot is made straight and at right angles, as shown at c2, and the other wall is convex, as shown at c3, so as to be acted upon by the key, as will be hereinafter described.
Upon the under side of the tumblers c and c are grooves or slots c4 c4, in which the bolt b can slide when the tumblers are brought into the position shown in Fig. 2.
e is a wire spring, one end resting against the inner periphery of the case a, and the other end resting in a slot e on the under side of the tumbler c', and is held in position by a pin e2, projecting upward from the lower plate of the case d. f is a similar spring, and connected in the same manner with the tumbler c.
g, Fig. 1, is a projection extending upward from the lower plate of case @,between which and the guide a the key d slides.
g is a slot in the outer periphery of the case to allow theadmission of the key d.
h is another opening in the periphery of the case to allow the passage of the bolt b and the extending projection b4.
h is an inwardlyextending projection at one side of the slot h, forming an additional support for the part b4. v
The key d is constructed with one side straight and the other of irregular curves and angles, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to press upon the tumblers, as will be readily understood.
m is a pin or stud extending downward from the upper plateand resting upon `the upper part of the bolt b to keep it in position. This pin is shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2 and in section in Fig. 4.
Vhen it is desired to unlock the device,
the key d is inserted in the slot g', with the straight side toward the center. When the point of the key reaches the convex side or portion c3 of the tumbler c', it will force the tumblerto the right and allow the key to pass farther until the point reaches the con- IOO Vex portion c3 of the tumbler c, which tumbler, in its turn, as the key is pressed in, is forced to the right in like manner until the tumblers and the key are in the position shown in Fig. 2. The slot on the under side of the tumblers will then be both in a straight e and continuous line, and the bolt b, with the part b4, can then be drawn out until the part b4 is entirely free from Contact with the case ct. In this position the part b can be turned on the pivot b3, as shown in Fig. 2, thus releasing whatever had been locked or secured, as will be manifest.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A'lock constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of a case, a sliding bolt b, formed at its outer end Witha hoop' divided. into two parts and pivoted togetlier, one of said parts bei-ng providedl with i an extension to enter a slot in the case and in juxtaposition with the bolt b, said bolt being also provided with transverse slots on its upper surface to allow the passage of sliding tumblers c c', provided with slots on their upper sides, with convex walls on one side, against which the key acts, and with slots on their under sides to allow the passage of the bolt b,- springs e and f, adapted to hold said i turnblers in position, and guides for the tumblers and the key, and integral with one of the ease-plates, all said parts being arranged for operation as and for the purposes set i forth.
