48,646, dated February 21, 1889, and in Austria-Hungary, No. 22,305 and No. 58,231, dated December 10, 1887,) of which thefollowing is a specification.
- The object of my invention is to provide pasteboard blanks for making boxes with angle binding-strips in such a manner that said strips are not torn or ruptured when bending the blank to form the box.
The invention consists in grooving the pasteboard blank on the outside, then pasting the sideparts of longitudinally crimped or grooved binding-strips on the blank at the sides of the grooves, the blank being fiat while the said strips are being pasted on.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a machine used for pasting the edge and angle strips on the blanks for pasteboard boxes. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, the reels being omitted. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on the line as a, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of a pasteboard blank that has been creased and grooved and 'upon which a strip has been pasted. .Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view of the same bent at right angles. Fig. 6 is an enlarged horizontal sectional View of the pressing-roller used for grooving the strip longitudinally. Fig. 7 is a plan view of a blank upon which the strips have been pasted at the edges and creases. I
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. 7
The feed-roller WV is journaled horizontally along the front edge of the table A, upon which the blanks can be placed. On a rail B a series of holders 0 are held vertically adjustable by bolts passed through vertical slotsin the holders, the bolts being provided at their inner ends with dovetailed heads, which can slide in a dovetailed groove of the rail B, nuts being screwed on the outer ends of said bolts. In the lower forked ends of said holders the pressing-rollers a are mounted, and at each side of each roller a disk 6 is mounted loosely upon the shaft of the roller a, and said disks are pressed against the sides of the roller a by springs d, surrounding the shaft of the roller and interposed between washers b at the sides of the disks and the inner sides of the shanks of the forked ends of the holders.
The apertures in the centers of the disk e are considerably larger than the diameter of the shaft, so that said disks can assume positions eccentrical to the shaft and roller a. On the upper end of each holder 0 a reel or pulley c is mounted, from which a strip of paper or other material passes to the corresponding presser-roller a and between the corresponding disks 6, said strip also passing over the edge of a roller g, which is moistened or provided with gum or paste, so that the strip is rendered adhesive before being pressed upon the blank. Adjacent to the holders 0 the laterally-adjustable holders D are held on the rail B, and on said holders D the presser-rollers b are journaled. On the table A the horizontal slides i are mounted to slide laterally, and are provided with suitable clamping or looking devices a" for locking them in place and with the inclined guide-ribs i on the inner sides. On said slides are mounted the horizontal or nearly horizontal circumferentially-grooved .presser-rollers h, the moistening or gumming rollers l, and the reels or pulleys k. The edges of the slides i also serve as guides for the pasteboard blanks.
In case the pasteboard is rather thick and .is provided with grooves 01 in its outer face where it is to be bent, the strips 7', that have been pasted on, would be torn by bending the blank, and to avoid this I paste the strip on in the manner shown in' Figs. 1 and 5-that is, in such a manner as to form a hollow ridge W over the groove a. When the blank is then bent at right angles, as shown in Fig. 5, those parts of the strip that are not pasted on-that is, the parts forming the hollow ridge-rest firmly on the outer sides of the pasteboard.
To paste the strips on so that they form the hollow ridge, I provide the presser-roller (I with a circumferential groove and mount a comparatively sharp-edged roller on adjacent to the grooved roller a, the edge of said roller m pressing the longitudinal central part of the paper or other strip into the circumferential groove of the presser-roller a.
The operation is as follows: The blank of pasteboard, which has been previously creased on the inside or creased on the inside and grooved on the outside on the lines on which it is to be bent to form the box, is placed upon the table A and is moved in the direction of the arrow 0c, the slides or guides 1' being so adjusted that the side edges of the blank pass along the edges of said guides. The circumferentially-grooved presser-rollers 7t press a gummed or moistened strip Vof paper against the edges of the blank, and said strip is pressed firmly 011 the top and bottom of the pasteboard blank by the action of the presser-rolls b, thus forming an edge binding. To paste on the angle binding-strips V at the same time, the holders C are adjusted according to the required positions of said strips. The anglestrips are pasted on at the same time with the edge strips, and said strips can be pasted on throughout the entire width or only along the edges of the strips, thereby forming the hollow ridge W between the pasted edges.
It is evident that the strips secured on the sheet in one operation all run in the same direction, and the strips running in a transverse direction must be secured by a second like operation.
The corners F of the blank may be cutout, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7, so that the blank can be converted without any further cutting or trimming into a box.
As the disks 6 serve as guides for the strips pressed down by the rollers a, said disks must be mounted to yield.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaini as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The method herein shown and described of providing pasteboard blanks for making pasteboard boxes with angle binding-strips, consisting in grooving the pasteboard blank on the outside, then grooving or crimpingthe binding-strips longitudinally, and pasting the side parts of said strips on the blank at the sides of the grooves, the blank being flat while the strips are being pasted on, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
TIIEODOR REMUS.
